For over 100 years, RSLWA has remained focussed on its core mission to meet the needs of veterans and their families. Throughout the last three years, RSLWA has undertaken its most significant organisational transformation since its creation. The incoming COO has an opportunity to provide a trusted organisation and ensure that RSLWA is ready to adapt to the changing needs and requirements of the defence community in Western Australia.

As a key member of the executive leadership team, the COO will work strategically and collaboratively across the organisation, building strong internal and external relationships. 

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will monitor, review and evaluate RSLWA operations to ensure continued effectiveness in delivery of desired outcomes. In addition you will be responsible for:

  • Translating strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organisation-wide goal setting, performance management and annual operations planning. 
  • Leading the strategy to build organisational capability and develop and maintain a positive, high performance, achievement-oriented and supportive culture.
  • Overseeing organisational operations, including the performance of ANZAC Club. 
  • Supporting the CEO in the development, implementation and governance of policies and procedures within RSLWA.
  • Develop and manage projects which support strategic objectives.
  • Ensure sound and financial management addressing operational budget issues promptly. 
  • Work with other organisations to provide better, stronger outcomes for all veterans and their families.
  • As part of the RSLWA executive, support Board sub-committees as required.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all relevant legislation, corporate governance requirements relevant to RSLWA and the Not-for-Profit sector.
  • Development and review of policy ensuring appropriate implementation and governance.
  • Ensure health and safety, legal, environmental and other guiding legislative requirements are met in the conduct of RSLWA activities.
  • Providing leadership and oversight for people-related initiatives including staff and manager development, performance management, organisational structure and career planning. 
  • Working with the senior leadership team in contributing to the strategic and operational planning and associated department planning processes.

What You Need

This role demands a leader who can effectively translate strategic vision into operational excellence, ensuring financial accountability and supporting our mission to enable veterans and their families to thrive. 

You will have proven experience in a senior leadership role leading a multi-disciplined team. In addition you will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in the delivery of complex programs and projects including the application of project management methodologies
  • A proven track record of delivering strong community and commercial outcomes
  • Up to date knowledge of various regulatory requirements including current developments in relevant industrial relations and corporate governance matters
  • Proven stakeholder engagement and management skills and ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholder groups
  • Exceptional organisational and planning skills 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
  • Sound financial acumen including procurement oversight, management of budgets, business plans and risk analysis
  • Ability to diagnose problems quickly and act decisively. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance or related discipline will well regarded
  • An armed forces background is highly desirable.

You will be able to show an understanding of and commitment to the RSLWA objectives and functions and a willingness to understand issues facing the veteran community.
