The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys enjoy the largest footprint in the National Rugby League. We are proud to be a cornerstone of the North Queensland community and a major part of the economy for over 25 years.

This role is based at Hutchinson Builders Centre in Townsville adjacent to Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

We are looking for a Head of Strength and Conditioning Coach to work with the Head of Performance to deliver the strength and conditioning program, driving athletic performance of the NRL squad.

You will assist the Head of Performance in developing programs, policies, standards and procedures for all aspects of the High Performance Department and present them to the Head Coach and Head of Football. You will recommend efficiency improvements and player levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Head of Performance to develop strategies to optimise the physical preparation and performance of the NRL team
  • Design and implement a strength and power program to improve athletic performance and reduce injury risk
  • Deliver Rugby League specific conditioning programs with consideration towards playing position and test results
  • Deliver technical instruction to improve movement competencies of the athletes and improve game and position specific speed and agility
  • Monitor player fatigue and design appropriate recovery sessions to ensure optimal player preparation for training and competition
  • Provide leadership and management to existing S&C coaches/ sports science personnel within the Cowboys organisation
  • Conduct appropriate field testing in conjunction with Head of Performance
  • Assume game day role as Head Coach requires
  • Align physical requirements of the game with the vision of the Head Coach
  • In consultation with sports Dietician and Head of Performance, manage the clubs supplement program, and help advise designated players on nutrition strategies depending on athletes needs
  • In consultation with Dietician and Head of Performance, help manage nutritional strategies around training and matches

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Higher Education Bachelor/Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science or related field
  • Proven experience in delivering strength and conditioning programs to improve athletic performance
  • Proven experience in using velocity-based training, specifically working with Gymaware units to monitor and optimize training
  • Proven experience working with Vald’s suite of monitoring technology to monitor training and experience in using this to inform program design specific to the athlete’s needs
  • Proven experience in delivering speed & agility programs to improve athletic performance
  • Experience operating in a professional or semi-professional sporting environment
  • Experience working in elite performance and/or coaching programs
  • Ability to meet NRL requirements for accreditation/registration
  • Ability to apply strength and conditioning principles to deliver meaningful and impactful improvements in strength, fitness and athletic movement
  • Understanding of existing evidence-based research, and the implementation of new research areas to enhance the club, sport, athletes, support team and coaches
  • Ability to apply knowledge, use and promote technical coaching proficiency and coaching pedagogy to create an environment conducive to learning and continued pursuit of improvement towards excellence
  • Develop third-party consultant relationships and form strategic partnerships with industry leaders in technology, innovation, strength and conditioning and sports science
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage priorities to deliver outcomes and objectives
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal with the ability to earn trust and credibility
  • Excellent people management and leadership skills, communication, and conflict resolution
  • High level of self-awareness and overall emotional intelligence

  • Drivers Licence
  • ESSA Level 2 Sports Scientist
