You will lead, manage and direct the activities of the Soil Catchment & Riverine Processes unit, maintaining close links with internal and external clients, and research institutions. You will provide timely and high quality technical and scientific information and advice to address policy, legislative and other issues. Alongside your peers and other agencies, you will provide leading edge and innovative scientific advice, research, data and analysis for the protection and sustainable management of the Queensland's soil, catchments and landscapes.Your demonstrated knowledge, experience and expertise in river science and soil and water biogeochemical processes will enhance the unit’s ability to deliver excellent scientific projects in a timely manner. In this position you will be expected to value-add to evidence–based policy and planning decisions as well as on-ground actions.

The research areas of the Soil Catchment & Riverine Processes unit focus on:
- Soil, catchment and riverine processes, including catchment management prioritisation methods, landscape function science, nutrient management (including offsets), and water quality to support government programs and policy.
- The Queensland River Management Framework, including aquatic ecosystem rehabilitation processes and techniques.
- Supporting the activities of the Land Restoration Fund and the Office of the Great Barrier Reef.

As Science Leader you will:
• Lead and manage the unit, which incorporates research and operational programs supporting the Queensland Government's water, soil and landscape management agenda.
• Ensure the successful delivery of the projects currently undertaken by the unit by effectively managing the resources shared by the sections.
• Provide strategic leadership and management of complex projects that involve diverse stakeholder groups and may be impacted by conflicting priorities and sensitive political impacts.
• Enhance and maintain high level professional, scientific and technical expertise and skills to anticipate and respond to current and emerging issues with relevant research methodologies and technology applications.
• Develop and maintain linkages with other DESI business areas, other state and national agencies, national and state-based land resource assessment research partners, industry representatives, funding agencies, educational institutions, and community groups to ensure the ongoing relevance of soil and nutrient management services and activities.
• Provide timely and high quality technical and scientific information, synthesis and advice to senior management to address policy, legislative and other issues at both strategic and operational levels.
• Represent the Queensland Government and build professional networks with stakeholders, presenting results and outputs from modelling in a range of forums including scientific workshops, natural resource management bodies and industry stakeholder groups.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

This position requires:
1. Demonstrated high level leadership skills, including the ability to effectively manage work teams and individual staff and to initiate, develop, coordinate and deliver a multidisciplinary projects portfolio.
2. Demonstrated ability to design and manage complex project budgets.
3. Demonstrated contemporary knowledge and experience in soil, catchment and riverine science that is relevant to the needs of government, industry and community organisations.
4. Demonstrated ability to handle complex issues and provide high level strategic, technical and operational advice to senior management.
5. Demonstrated high level communication and negotiation skills, as well as ability to develop and sustain relationships with a wide range of customers and partners while representing the Department and its interests.
6. Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
