Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is leading software development activities to demonstrate the state of the art in the agile delivery of novel Automated Intelligence capability for operational consideration by capability managers.
This work will contribute to the DSTG Resilient Decision Highway (RDH) project and its Mission Adaptation for operational benefit. The RDH is an Australian Defence Force and FVEY partner (under the Grendel banner) driven state-of-the art platform for collaborative problem solving, superior situational awareness, and informed operational decision-making.
The RDH is a modular and agile technology ecosystem providing timely situational awareness to the intelligence analyst and warfighter regardless of mission domain. It has a focus on not just automation analytics but primarily on the agile transition and integration of novel analytic capability to analysts in a timely manner, unhindered by the operating classification or mission. Addressing the “How” as well as the “What”.
Location:
Due to the integrated nature of the teams and the classification of the work, being up to and including TOP SECRET. The preference is for the work to be undertaken at DSTG Edinburgh. Where this is not possible other options will be considered under consultation as agreed to by both parties. Working-From-Home or from DISP accredited facilities will be supported at 20% of the resource’s time. Increased external work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Software Engineering roles:
- Common Services (CS) and Platforms (PLT): Continued development and sustainment of secure and observable cloud-native platforms to host both ‘production quality’ development tooling and research workloads, across multiple environments with different security constraints.
- Responsible for the agile development and maintenance of the underlying platform infrastructure (including DevSecOps Pipelines and Kubernetes) that RDH runs on across classification boundaries, to accelerate the transition of novel capability to operational environments.
- Establish the common service foundation which provides the resources for connecting and orchestrating components of the ecosystem towards a common mission.
- Sustaining the RDH ability to connect with external tools, data, and processes.
- Common Analytic Framework (CAF): Addition and extension of analytic agent capabilities based on Mission Adaptation requirements, including tracking, association and correlation algorithms, and Patterns of Life analyses, particularly with respect to exploratory analysis following I&Ws.
- Responsible for the agile development of novel analytic capability for operational consideration. Including the development of synthetic 'reasoning" agents, the communication between communities of these agents and the dynamic orchestration of their activities.
- Horizon scan and work across teams, to develop mission agnostic integrated analytic capability for broad utility.
- Promote and demonstrate the utility of semantics to unambiguously represent meaning of information within RDH.
- Mission Adaptation (MA): Through client engagement, understand, design and develop mission adaptations of the RDH for operational consideration. Depending upon client and operational environment, adaptation may include aspects of PLT, CS, CAF and HMP and hence a close working relationship with these teams is required. Target systems are classified, PV clearances are highly desirable.
- Demonstrate the utility of RDH to operations capability managers through its adaptation and extension to automate current manual workflows processes.
- The nature of these adaptations is classified, PV highly desirable.
- For this contract, it has been identified that a dedicated sensor fusion and tracking team is required to enable delivery of outcomes for a classified mission adaptation.
Experience Required
- A formal degree or equivalent experience in a field of relevance is required.
- A comprehensive understanding of the Defence Operational Environment.
- Understanding of modern software development / programme management methodologies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- NV1 clearance or better
