National Executive Advisor to the Chief Justice

The National Executive Adviser is part of a discrete team assisting the Chief Justice to support the exercise of the Chief Justice's statutory duties and exercise of their day-to-day responsibilities across two extremely busy Courts. Together the Courts comprise 122 judges; hundreds of legal, social science and related support staff; registries and circuits across 43 locations; and are responsibility for around 100,000 filings per year. The National Executive Adviser will also work closely with the staff assisting the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar (CEO/PR) of the FCFCOA and play a key role as part of the Courts' National Operations Team.

The Chief Justice is responsible for the management of the administrative affairs of the Courts and the effective, orderly and expeditious discharge of the business of the Courts under the FCFCOA Act, assisted by the CEO/PR.
The National Executive Adviser provides critical support and assistance to the Chief Justice. This includes carrying out high level legal and policy work, legal research, preparing complex and sensitive correspondence and reports and drafting submissions from all areas of the Courts' jurisdiction. The National Executive Adviser also develops policies and protocols across a broad range of issues relating to the administration of the Courts and liaises with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

The National Executive Adviser is also responsible for planning and managing the content of programs for the legal education, training and wellbeing of judges, including the Judicial Library, an interactive online platform for judicial education and communication.
The role is multi-dimensional and demanding, requiring exceptional agility and organisational skills, together with strong communication and interpersonal skills and highly developed legal skills. The occupant will demonstrate leadership through the performance of all functions. They will show great initiative; be highly motivated and able to work under pressure.

The National Executive Adviser reports to the National Strategic Adviser - - Legal, Policy and Statistical Analysis. They will have an important leadership role with oversight of the Legal and Policy Officer within the Chief Justice's legal and policy team as well as the Executive Assistants and the National Executive Coordinator within the Chief Justice's team.

The key duties of the position include
The National Executive Adviser is responsible for assisting the Chief Justice to support the exercise of the Chief Justice's statutory duties and responsibilities by undertaking legal, policy, administrative and strategic work, including:
1. Providing high level legal and policy support to the Chief Justice;
2. Undertaking in-depth legal research and analysis, including to assist with internal court reform, policy development, case management processes and training material;
3. Handling sensitive material and information on behalf of the Chief Justice, including in relation to judicial complaints;
4. Drafting complex correspondence, presentations and reports, including submissions, conference papers, submissions and information to or for Judges, Government or Parliament;
5. Undertaking legal research on topical and emerging issues of family and general federal law, including providing high-level briefings/memoranda to the Chief Justice;
6. Managing staff within the Chief Justice's chambers, including the legal and policy team, National Executive Coordinator, and Executive Assistants;
7. Supporting the Chief Justice to ensure modern and effective judicial policies and programs, by planning legal education and training for judges, including supporting the Judicial Education Committee;
8. Providing advice and acting as a liaison for the Judges of both Courts on matters within the purview of the Chief Justice, including in relation to judicial entitlements;
9. Assisting the National Strategic Adviser with statistical analysis and data reporting, including for internal case management and external reporting obligations;
10. Communicating effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders;
11. Supporting national and international engagement by the Chief Justice and the Courts;
12. Supporting various judicial and other committees and working groups, including assisting with projects and research and preparing agendas and issues papers; and
13. Working as part of the national operations team assisting the Chief Justice and CEO/PR.
