The Statutory Planning Division is responsible for assessing and determining development applications, administering the ACT leasehold system, assisting the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal in its review of decisions, providing advice to the community and industry on development matters, and the environmental impact assessment process relating to impact track development applications.

THE TEAM YOU WILL WORK IN

As a Director within the Statutory Planning Division, you will often be the first point of contact between the Directorate, the community and industry and must have excellent communication skills and the ability to provide consistently high levels of customer service.

You will provide advice, information and recommendations to Senior Directors and Executive, to assist in decision making and prepare input for Ministerial briefs and correspondence.

You must be a team player, with the ability to work independently, identify solutions to problems and contribute to a positive team culture.

The Merit Assessment team is responsible, under the Planning Act 2023, for assessing and determining a large range and number of development proposals, including complex commercial proposals, multi-unit, mixed use development, and estate development plans. The Merit Assessment team also handles the assessment and decision process of exemption declarations (single dwelling minor departures). The team also assists the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal in its review of decisions.

The DA Gateway Team is the primary public interface for planning and development matters. The team handles all pre-application meetings for development applications and provides advice on potential applications. The Gateway Team also undertake completeness checks for development applications, which is the documentation check process prior to a development application being lodged.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities for the position are to:

  • Process, assess and determine a wide range of development applications and undertake other tasks associated with the delivery of development outcomes.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and advice to development proponents, community and industry in relation to the development application process, including in writing, over the phone and in the pre-development and post-development stages.
  • Contribute to a culture of constant improvement and innovation by both suggesting and listening to new ways of working which improve services to the community and other stakeholders and implementing those solutions.
  • Draft various documents to a high standard , to tight deadlines and managing a number of priorities supporting your supervisor / manager and the executive. This includes the timely circulation of documents, the collation of agency responses, the storage and electronic filing of documents, and the routine management of data and records in accordance with the Territory Records Act 2002.
  • Assist in the preparation of input for Ministerial briefs and correspondence.
  • Assist the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal in its review of planning decisions.
  • Manage a team of junior and senior development assessment officers and ensure that development applications with your team are undertaken in accordance the specified statutory timeframes.
  • Undertake other tasks, as directed.

Notes: This is a temporary position available from 07 June 2024 to 28 June 2024. Selection may be based on written application and referee reports only. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. This position is available to ACT Government officers and employees only.
