Global South PhD Scholarship: The Australian National University (ANU) is offering a PhD position for a Global South applicant as part of the ARC Future Fellowship project on Humanitarian Emergencies & Forced Displacement. This scholarship provides an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research focusing on displacement contexts and humanitarian emergencies. Candidates with lived experience of displacement are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • The PhD position is offered through an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship project focused on Humanitarian Emergencies & Forced Displacement.
  • The PhD scholar will collect and analyze mixed method data from one of the case studies: Europe’s hot spots and refugee ‘crisis’, Horn of Africa emergency, or Myanmar-Bangladesh Rohingya emergency.
  • Research priority areas include trafficking, child/early marriages, exploitative/forced child labor, and sexual abuse.
  • ️ The PhD scholar will develop and execute a project aligning with the broader purpose of the ARC Project, aiming to enhance decision-making and program implementation regarding children and young people’s protection in displacement contexts and humanitarian emergencies.
  • This offers an opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research alongside academics, practitioners, and community partners, with the chance to collaborate and learn from colleagues in the Department of International Relations.
  • Deadlines for application:
    • Domestic students: EoI anytime, Full application by 31 March (30 April latest) or 30 September (31 October latest).
    • International students: EoI by 31 May, Full application by 31 July (31 August latest).

Eligibility/Qualification: To be eligible for this scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be either a domestic or international candidate.
  • Meet the PhD entry requirements for ANU, including submitting a 5,000-word PhD proposal.
  • Be enrolling full-time and hold an honours degree (first class) or an equivalent standard master’s degree with a substantial research component.

Description: The selected PhD scholar will contribute to the ARC project by collecting and analyzing mixed-method data from one of the case studies focusing on Europe’s hot spots and refugee ‘crisis’, Horn of Africa emergency, or Myanmar-Bangladesh Rohingya emergency. The research priorities include trafficking, child/early marriages, exploitative/forced child labour, and sexual abuse. The scholar will be expected to develop and execute a project aligned with the broader purpose of the ARC Project, aimed at enhancing decision-making and program implementation regarding children and young people’s protection in displacement contexts and humanitarian emergencies. Selection Criteria: Candidates must address the following essential selection criteria in their application:

  • Well-developed skills in mixed method analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in designing and implementing questionnaires.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Stage 2: Full, formal applications should be submitted through the ANU Application Manager.

  • Domestic students: March 31 (April 30 latest) or September 30 (October 31 latest).
  • International students: July 31 (August 31 latest).
