Currently, there are around 4.3 million Australians with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian.

A new role awaits

We have an exciting new opportunity for an EL1 Assistant Director to join the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) in the Legal Practice and Capability (LPC) Branch.

The LPC Branch offers strategic and operational assistance to the legal functions of the Chief Counsel and General Counsel Divisions within the Agency. Additionally, the LPC Branch facilitates the improvement of legal knowledge and skills throughout the Agency by supporting various activities such as recruitment, onboarding, training, reporting, and projects across all divisions.

Situated within the Chief Counsel Division, the LPC Branch is also responsible for the Agencys AAT Case Management and Dispute Resolution & Litigation Branches, in addition to the Legislation and Legal Policy Branch. The General Counsel Division oversees two branches - Legal Services and Complaints and FOI Management.

The EL1 Assistant Director of Legal Practice and Capability is responsible for coordinating and taking on the responsibility for handling detailed or sensitive projects. These projects may involve a range of activities with diverse and unrelated processes or methods that could influence the strategic or operational outcomes supporting the NDIAs objectives of creating a world-leading National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Reporting to the Director Strategy and Reporting, The EL1 Assistant Director will contribute to the development of divisional strategies and provide strategic advice on behalf of the Chief Counsel and General Counsel to the Agency’s Strategic Executive Team (SLT), the NDIA Board and the Minister.

The EL1 Assistant Director Legal Practice and Capability is a leadership role, you will be identifying and resolving issues and risks across a range of business activities along with supporting your valued team to achieve outcomes. Your ability to multitask and understand a range of matters within the business area will have you developing relationships across the NDIA and seeing the LPC Branch succeed.

Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Preparing and reviewing written material including business cases, reports and executive briefs and corporate documentation
  • Identifying, developing, implementing and monitoring workflow and outcomes, ensuring the team is equipped with the necessary skills and resources for supporting the Agency’s functions.
  • Leading the development and administrative management of new systems, processes and practical tools including guidance material and training relating for the team
  • Monitoring and managing compliance with established Agency procedures and relevant frameworks.
  • Performing any other duties that are required by the Director or Branch Manager.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Chief Counsel and General Counsel multi-year strategies.
  • Proactively engage with and maintain relationships with all areas of the Chief Counsel and General Counsel Divisions, key business areas across the agency and other Commonwealth agencies.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a small team to deliver quality business outcomes.

While this role is ideally performed from ACT Deakin, NSW Surry Hills, NSW Parramatta, QLD Brisbane, SA Adelaide, VIC Geelong, VIC Richmond WA Perth, remote working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role in an ongoing capacity, however non-ongoing roles up to 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 2 years may be offered.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police History check, Worker Screening check and/or Working with Children Check (where required) and provide evidence of Australian Citizenship.
