We are looking for an experienced Design Manager for renewables business to become a key member of the SCT’s Renewables team based in Sydney. The successful candidate will manage the design scope from tender, through delivery to practical completion by ensuring that the designs & engineering scope of works are completed in a timely manner, in compliance with regulatory requirements.
The Design Manager - Renewables will provide expert, objective, accurate and timely professional advice to senior management, Project Managers and contractors on technologies, engineering & design, and planning matters within the Renewable Energy projects development and delivery business. This role will be responsible for the development pf all engineering activities from conceptual design to detailed design stage, including the preparation of technical specifications, site investigation activities, designs, drawings, plans, reports and other documents and all necessary approvals required to enable the works.
Your primary responsibilities include:
Strategic and operational Management
- Propose strategies for the business that outline processes and procedures for optimising technical designs and assets operational performance, mitigating risks, ensuring compliance with industry regulations.
- Advise the organisation on the assessment of renewable energy generation and storage technologies and how mitigate technical and operational impacts, comply with regulations and avoid excessive operation costs.
Projects origination
- Support the project’s origination process though the assessment and proposition of optimal technical solutions for the identified sites for renewable energy projects developments.
Design Preparation, Review and Improvement
- Prepare feasibility analysis of potential renewable energy projects considering the site location and physical conditions, as well as the grid connection restrictions and possibilities, including yield studies for the different technologies, and high level capex/opex estimates.
- Prepare technical specifications for site investigations services, identifying, negotiating and commercially engage consultants and service providers.
- Perform the appropriate technology selection for each project, taking into account technical requirements, performance and economic parameters.
- Manage design development and review processes to ensure optimal practical technical and economic solutions, which are safe to operate and maintain
- Preparation of documentation for the engineering solution.
- Manage the preparation of BoD, BoQs, and capex/opex budget estimates.
- Monitors engineering & design activities of designer and subcontractors to comply with project requirements
- Support the preparation of Financial Models, Risk Analysis, and Development and Delivery Planning.
- Facilitate or participate in regular reviews with the Project Teams to evaluate alternative design and engineering proposals and ensure they are within the project budget and timeframe
- Support the Grid Connection Manager with all necessary technical matters.
- Ensure all required third party design review and approval processes are undertaken and that all issues raised are resolved in a timely manner to ensure design approval in accordance with program
Collective working as a team
- Coordinate with relevant internal stakeholders including business development, legal, commercial, financial, land, environment, project management team and etc in order to ensure that design confirms to all safety, environmental, construction, commissioning and operation requritment
We are looking for the following skills and experience:
- Minimum tertiary (Bachelor's degree) qualification in Engineering
- Thorough understanding and experienced use of Australian Standards
- Over 10 years of industrial experience in renewable energy projects (Solar PV, Wind, Hydro and BESS)
- 5 - 10 years of technical management as Design Manager
- Experience working in renewables projects development
- Multi-discipline project experience desirable in Renewables, Energy and Construction.
- Proven commercial and legislative compliance skills and design frameworks and systems and in managing design systems
- Demonstrated competencies in Head Contracts and Subcontracts understanding and interpretation
- Ability to plan, budget for and manage the tender and project design delivery process
- Emerging relationships with major consultant partners, relationship building, influencing and negotiation skills
- Skills in developing and implementing a process and/or product system of audits and schedules
- Skill in quantitative and qualitative design risk identification, assessment, controls and management
- Skill in identifying and modifying design processes, technology, and/or products and analytical skills in assessing progress and performance
