The Opportunity
The Decarbonisation and Sustainability team contributes to the development and implementation of corporate and sector-wide decarbonisation plans and climate risk management frameworks for transport and infrastructure sectors. The team is accountable for integrating best-practice sustainability requirements into infrastructure (transport infrastructure and government buildings) planning and delivery specifications and guidelines, and working with project delivery teams to ensure effective implementation.

We're seeking a Senior Sustainability Advisor to join our team and who will be responsible for leadership, technical and policy related expert advice and information and the provision of specialist sustainability services to both the Agency and the State Government, as we drive forward the department's key sustainability objectives.

The position has a major contribution to the development and credibility of the Department's technical/professional reputation and the sustainability of essential discipline related in-house expertise, capability and corporate knowledge and assists the Unit Manager in maintaining the technical adequacy, currency, relevance and integrity of discipline-related Departmental standards and guidelines.

As a Senior Sustainability Advisor, you will provide expert technical advice to enhance planning, design, construction, and operational effectiveness. You will identify and advise on risks, trends, and opportunities, helping to shape the development of technical standards and objectives. The role involves challenging existing standards to achieve better outcomes and establishing processes to ensure policy compliance.

About You
We are seeking someone with a strong knowledge of the Sustainability discipline, resulting policies, legislation and systems at state and national level. Knowledge base should span decarbonisation, circular economy, adaptation, green infrastructure, climate change risk management and a variety of other disciplines, often in combinations determined by interdisciplinary study.

The ideal candidate will competently provide discipline advice reflective of industry capability and suitable to projects and programs in the field of planning, construction, operations and maintenance of transport infrastructure and buildings.

The candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong organisational skills. They will apply their expertise in sustainability issues, risks, and trends to drive innovation and problem-solving. They will be skilled at building strategic partnerships and encouraging collaboration.

The candidate will exhibit strong judgement and analytical skills, making well-informed decisions based on evidence. Their ability to adapt to uncertainty and proactively seek necessary information and support is essential. They will ensure compliance and help the team identify and mitigate risks effectively.

Requirements
A recognised degree and/or post graduate qualification in engineering, science, planning or other appropriate discipline transferrable to sustainability services.

Special Conditions
The successful candidate will be required to provide a National Police Check (NPC) prior to employment with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport which must be renewed every three years.

Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.
