Firstly, why might this role and company interest you?

  • You’ll earn a base salary between $155k - $180k, aligned with your experience (super paid atop this base figure)
  • You’ll be stepping into long-term, multi-year projects, so wave goodbye to hopping from job to job to job.
  • You’ll get exposure to proprietary products and R&D in some… rather interesting spaces, shall we say.
  • You’ll be working with phenomenally intelligent colleagues who are not consultants – they really are doers and builders (of some incredibly interesting, relevant, important tech).
  • This business, in our estimation, is in the goldilocks zone. They’re big enough make an impact, yet small enough to remain agile, and fast A lumbering, big (4) corporate they are not, and yet nor are they a group of mates united under a new logo. Sweet spot. They hit it.
  • This business was born from ex-defence personnel, purely to service the defence industry, strengthening Australia’s broader defence sector – they’re a real mission driven bunch.
  • You’ll be joining a group who are extremely selective when it comes to the work they take on (this is the furthest thing from a “bid for everything” type environment).
  • Although you’ll be working on critical projects, you’ll be able to WFH. Some things will require you in the office, but do rest assured flexible work is here.

What will you be doing in this role?
We won’t insult your intelligence with a copy & pasted job description outlining duties you’re already familiar with (you’re the Software Engineer, not us; you know how you’ll spend your time). Let’s just say that if you’re thinking along the lines of “write supremely good code,” “share expertise,” “get stuff done,” “improve things, in an ongoing manner,” and “play nice with your colleagues, many who aren’t engineers like you,” you’re on the right track.

What experience or particulars do you need to succeed in this role?
  • Strong Python skills are a must for this role. The sharper you are with Python, the better your chances of this business saying, “we want you”
  • Good knowledge of the Infrastructure as Code space: Puppet, Terraform, AWS CDK, etc. If you really want to stand out, experience with Pulumi would achieve that.
  • This one always gets mentioned, but dead set, the ability to translate tech to laypeople will get you major ticks.
  • Ever managed a Kubernetes cluster? We’d love to know
  • Tinkered around in the cloud? Specifically Azure or AWS?
  • Experience trumps qualifications, but if you have a CS degree or something similar, lovely.
  • Physically, you’ll need to be on the ground in our nation’s capital. No getting around this one, alas.
  • At a minimum, you’ll have to have your active NV2.
  • Although Python will be your weapon of choice, if you can hammer out great code in another language – JavaScript, for instance – happy days.
