About the role:
The Senior Consultant, Workplace Health and Safety will have a key role in developing, refining and embedding foundational health, safety and wellbeing (HSW) systems with a focus on integrating and aligning the requirements of the proposed psychological health regulations, to support holistic risk management and mitigation practices across the domains of prevention, early intervention and appropriate response.
This role also supports and works closely with the Health, Wellbeing and Early Intervention team in the Occupational Health Safety and Wellbeing Unit and contributes to the development of strategic direction, policy and procedures for the systematic and consistent approach to the management of employee health, safety and wellbeing aligned with legislative compliance, best practice and standards.

How you'll make a difference:
- Develop and implement health and safety management system (HSMS) policy, procedures, guides and tools to support the department to manage operational and workplace health and safety risks.
- Contribute to the development of, and lead initiatives and processes to support effective prevention, risk management and mitigation practices and monitor and evaluate these initiatives and processes.
- Provide leadership and expert advice on matters arising in relation to occupational health and safety legislation, compliance codes and best practice to enhance staff health and safety outcomes.
- Contribute to the development of strategic implementation plans, and training including the incorporation of communication channels to identify and share better practice and support key health, safety and wellbeing processes and messaging
- Facilitate and support consultation mechanisms and processes for workplace health, safety and wellbeing matters to drive continuous improvement and innovation.
- Assist with and provide input into reports, ministerial and internal briefs, cabinet and agency/whole of government submissions as required.
- Facilitate the flow of health safety and wellbeing information to internal and external stakeholders such as other government departments as required.
- Manage as necessary, relevant health safety and wellbeing committees, forums and events, and governance processes.
- Work with departmental program and corporate areas to build HSW into the planning, design and implementation of services and corporate functions to design out health and safety risks.
- Work with senior management to set and achieve key performance indicators and standards.
- Provide expertise and specialist advice in relation to projects and initiatives, including engaging with stakeholders, and working in multidisciplinary teams to meet emerging pressures and demands, as required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, relevant legislation, regulations and standards would be expected
- Experience in complex work health and occupational health and safety matters would also be advantageous for this role.
- Demonstrated high level understanding of and expertise in the design, drafting, implementation and embedding of health and safety management systems including policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines preferably within a large and complex employer.
