The Law Enforcement Powers Section (LEPS) is seeking candidates to fill 2 Executive Level 1 vacancies. Successful candidates may be placed in a merit pool to be considered for other vacancies arising across the Criminal Justice Division in AGD.
LEPS is a high-performing, fast-paced area that delivers policy and legislative projects and provides advice to the Attorney-General and across government on a range of domestic policy issues relating to law enforcement powers, capabilities, integrity and oversight. We are responsible for the Australian Federal Police Act 1979, the Witness Protection Act 1994 and parts of the Crimes Act 1914 and the Criminal Code Act 1995.
Our team advises on a wide range of policy and legislative proposals from all across government, often within compressed timeframes. We work closely with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to identify challenges impacting a variety of operational areas and develop solutions to ensure law enforcement has the powers it needs, balanced with appropriate oversight arrangements. Where legislative change is required, we lead the development of bills and regulations to give effect to these solutions and assist in their implementation following passage or tabling.
We also respond to a high volume of requests from Commonwealth, state and territory agencies for advice on new policy and legislative proposals involving the modification, expansion or introduction of law enforcement powers. We work closely with other teams in AGD and the AFP to provide high quality advice that supports these stakeholders to achieve their objectives in a way that is consistent with existing legal frameworks and upholds the rule of law.
