We are seeking a highly skilled Director of Research and Development to lead our Market Unit Air Traffic Management (ATM) Voice Solutions team. This key role will be responsible for overseeing the development organization, driving product creation and implementation, aligning project execution with business objectives, and cultivating software and engineering team excellence.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary technology team of approximately 130 members in a matrix organization, setting clear goals, evaluating performance, and promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of product development from concept to deployment, ensuring products meet user needs, system functionality, and performance requirements.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and developments in technology and ATC voice communication systems, driving the exploration and implementation of new technologies and methodologies to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Secure funding for R&D projects, including drafting and overseeing budget proposals, and ensuring alignment with business goals.
  • Ensure all technology practices adhere to regulatory standards and security protocols, implementing quality assurance processes to ensure product excellence and reliability.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, IT, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree or relevant certification is a plus.
  • At least 10-15 years' experience in R&D, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably in the specific domain of the market unit.
  • Strong leadership qualities to effectively lead and motivate teams.
  • Technical expertise in designing scalable and secure software architectures, preferably with knowledge in real-time systems, communication protocols, and cloud technologies.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Understanding of financial management principles to ensure the financial health of R&D.
  • Excellent English language skills; German or additional language skills are a plus.
  • Strong team player with an intercultural mindset and willingness for international travel (~20%).
