The automotive sector plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. Electric vehicles represent a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation. A deep understanding of automotive batteries is essential for improving their efficiency and dependability. The development of electro-chemical-mechanical models is vital for capturing the complex dynamics of battery performance, aging, and mechanical influences.

This master's thesis involves the creation and validation of detailed electro-chemical-mechanical models utilizing the Python tool PyBaMM, an open-source platform designed for customized modeling of lithium-ion batteries and their aging characteristics.

  • Examine contemporary electro-chemical-mechanical modeling techniques applicable to automotive batteries.
  • Explore the fundamental electrochemical aging mechanisms and their interactions with mechanical deformation and cell thickness expansion (swelling).
  • Formulate mathematical and computational models to represent battery behavior under various mechanical conditions.
  • Validate the constructed models against experimental data.
Your Profile
  • Currently pursuing a master's degree in Engineering, Technical (Computer Science), or Natural Sciences (Physics, Mathematics, etc.)
  • Strong command of Python programming
  • Familiarity with battery technology is advantageous
  • Experience in mechanical finite element analysis (FEA) simulations is a plus but not mandatory
  • Ability to work independently while also being a collaborative team member
  • Proficient in English; knowledge of German is a plus
