Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Master student in Materials Science, Physics, or a related field to join our team at the Competence Center for Automotive and Industrial Electronics (KAI) in Villach, Austria. As a Master's thesis researcher, you will have the opportunity to work on an exciting project focused on the analysis of defects and microstructure in semiconductor materials using electron microscopy.

Project Overview

The aim of this project is to evaluate state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques, such as electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), on test structures to optimize sample preparation and SEM settings for the investigation of semiconductor materials. You will investigate the impact of industrial processing on Si and SiC dies and correlate the materials characteristics with processing parameters to understand their effect on chip robustness.

Responsibilities
  • Preparation of samples for materials characterization using SEM
  • Evaluation of state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques (EBSD, ECCI) to analyze semiconductor materials
  • Optimization of the applied methodology (sample preparation, characterization technique)
  • Investigation of the microstructure, lattice strain, and defects in semiconductor materials (Si, SiC) after individual manufacturing steps
  • Correlation of the materials characteristics and industrial processing
  • Documentation of results and preparation of a master's thesis
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and Master's studies (all lectures and exams completed)
  • Hands-on personality and experience in laboratory work and the operation of analytical tools for materials characterization
  • Basic understanding of materials physics and electron microscopy
  • Excellent English skills - written and spoken
