We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Planning Engineer at our Perth office, on a Permanent basis.
About this role As the Senior Planning Engineer, you will be accountable for undertaking power system studies relating to steady state, dynamic, transient, power quality and small signal power system performance.
To provide a focal point for technical support, develop works planning reports and business cases and implement technical criteria and to identify short and long term enhancements to the transmission or distribution networks to facilitate general load growth as well as new large customer and generator connections.
To ensure that the necessary budgets and approvals are obtained in a timely manner.Develop concept solutions (network and non-network) to resolve network constraints in a timely and economical manner and progress projects in a manner consistent with the Program Governance Framework.Prepare and justify connection advice for larger generators and customers, including connection and shared network augmentations, and assist with managing stakeholder expectations regarding delivery of their project.Lead Joint Planning Teams and provide a technical network planning function into the options analysis and scope development.Perform specialist studies relating to rotor angle, small signal, frequency and voltage stability, electromagnetic transients and corona.Perform incident investigations and work with generators and customers to define control system settings to maximise power system security.
Witness and assess generator compliance tests.Develop, maintain and validate the Digsilent Powerfactory base case model including generator and load dynamic models.Provide technical support to the Asset and Operations planning teams including Senior, Principal Engineers including the Area Manager and Engineering Team Leaders where required.
Provide mentoring capability to planning and graduate engineers.Responsible for accurate budgeting and cost tracking of customer and internal projects so as to meet budgetary estimates and avoid overrun.Prepare limit equations defining power system transfer capability for use by AEMO and Network Operations.Monitor, report and investigate power quality at the transmission levelPerform risk assessments and make recommendations (including development of contingency plans) to deal with the transmission network related risks which are managed by the Area.Build relationships with key stakeholders (includes, but not limited to System Management, Access Solutions, Customer Relations, AEMO, planners, designers, project managers, peers in other Functions and customers).About you We are seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:
Degree in Engineering (Electrical or equivalent)Eligible for CPEng / NPER registration or successful completion of a three year Graduate Development Program (Engineer)At least 9 + years relevant broad and extensive knowledge and expertise with demonstrated technical experience covering the following areas:Planning, design, operation and maintenance of electricity transmission networks;Large generation and load connection studies including assessment of dynamic behaviour, control system assessments and tuning of parameters.Economic and financial evaluation techniques.Knowledge of performing load flow and dynamics studies in Powerfactory or equivalent software packages.Knowledge of specialist studies relating to rotor angle, small signal, frequency and voltage stability, electromagnetic transients and corona;Understanding of energy markets and good appreciation of regulatory frameworks.Knowledge of modelling requirements for performing transmission network power system studies.Broad knowledge of transmission system plant and its application, including the planning criteria, specifications and design requirementsProficiency in key computer systems and specialty power system analysis applicationsHigh competency in report writing with excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.Joining Western Power Our people play a vital role in creating an innovative, safe, and supportive workplace, living our values and delivering exceptional service to the communities in which we operate.
