About our team National Operations | Onshore Detention | Detention Operations Australian Border Force Detention Operations officers are responsible for the oversight and management of Australia's Immigration Detention Facilities (IDFs) and the security, safety and welfare of detainees, contractors, visitors and staff.
They work closely with external service providers, government agencies and stakeholders to deliver services to detainees and ensure the security and safety of detainees and all others within the facility.
Officers are responsible for a range of operational and administrative tasks including quality assurance and oversight of contracted service delivery.
These tasks include audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with departmental and regulatory standards.
Officers work within high-risk, fast-paced environments and are required to respond to rapidly evolving situations and critical incidents to ensure the safety and security of the IDFs and the people within them.
Officers are eligible for the Immigration Detention Centre allowance as set in the Department of Home Affairs Enterprise Agreement 2024-27.

The successful candidates will be self-driven and seek to directly influence the key outcomes of the immigration detention network.
Duties and responsibilities Assist with the development of recommendations and solutions to immigration detention situations through the interpretation of legislation, policy and contracts Display an understanding of applicable legislation and policy as it relates to detainees and the operation of IDFs Identify contractual non-compliance by service providers and escalate for resolution Contribute to the planning of operations (participate in Operation Safe Centres) Interrogate a range of systems to conduct moderately complex risk assessments of detainees and detention facilities to inform operational planning Assist with responding to and managing incidents in accordance with departmental policies and procedures Establish positive and professional relationships with detainees Provide officer presence during service delivery Lead and conduct compound walks, assess detainee behaviour, identify issues and escalate for intervention.
Additional information Skills/systems: Compliance, Case Management and Detention (CCMD) Portal Integrated Client Services Environment (ICSE) Situationally aware and vigilant in high risk work, health and safety (WHS) and operational environments Interpretation and application of relevant legislation and delegated powers Research and analysis for evidence based decision making Behavioural analysis and emotional intelligence to assess detainee behaviour and risk profile Development and implementation of standard operating procedures Interview techniques, including the ability to build rapport and effectively elicit information Stakeholder engagement.

Eligibility To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:   ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
