Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health & Community Services is Canberra's only Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. Located in the heart of Canberra at our recently purpose-built clinic and offices in Narrabundah, we provide trusted holistic healthcare to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the ACT and surrounding areas.
Our Social Health Team supports the health and wellbeing of clients through a wide range of programs. This vacancy is in the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program which is an Indigenous-led national initiative designed to promote good health and reduce tobacco use and vaping. Smoking causes 37% of all First Nations deaths, and 50% of deaths age 45 years and over, so working in this program positively impacts health and life expectancy rates.
Comprehensive training is provided so no prior experience in this field is required. You would be working primarily with youth and young adults at sporting events and schools, engaging with them in positive ways that enable good conversations and influence. You would also contribute to other programs in the Social Health Team, collaborating on important health and wellbeing initiatives.
Skills and qualities we are looking for: Interest in contributing to Indigenous health and wellbeingGood interpersonal, communication and relationship building skillsExperience in working with Indigenous youth and young adults (could include coaching or playing sport)Ability to learn and develop with supportCapacity to work effectively, positively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary teamAbility to problem solve effectivelyCurrent driver's licence and Working with Vulnerable People registration (or be able to obtain)Qualifications are not essential because your capabilities and lived experience are more important, however relevant studies include Certificate III and above in Community Services.
