Youth Justice Custodial Services aim to engage young people in change by addressing their offending behaviour and equipping them with the skills required for positive community participation, within a safe and secure environment.
The Aboriginal Youth Justice unit is responsible for the design and development of policy, strategy, and program responses for young Aboriginal people in contact with or at risk of contact with the Youth Justice system.
About the role: As the Team Manager you will manage and support a team of Aboriginal Liaison Officers who are responsible for engaging and actively working with young Aboriginal people in custody.
They provide culturally specific support and programs to the young people, family, and community.
You will have oversight in ensuring the cultural rights of an Aboriginal young person is maintained and are managed in a culturally appropriate manner and that adequate cultural support is provided.
Key responsibilities include: Effectively lead and manage a team of Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOs)Provide team leadership to the ALO team, including mentoring, structured learning, professional development, coaching and performance managementAdvocate for the young Aboriginal people in custody, engaging and involving their family members and community in case work and planningProvide secondary consultation to staff to assist them to appropriately respond to the needs of young Aboriginal peopleProvide high level advice and support to the Manager, Aboriginal Youth Justice Operations and other senior managers, anticipating risks and opportunitiesAbout you: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal communityPays attention to words, expression and body language; recognises behaviours that promote a culture of inclusionChampions the importance of partnership through co-creation approaches; brings people together to share resources, tools and case studies to build capability and confidenceQualifications/Requirements A current Employee Working with Children Check (WWCC) card is required and will need to be provided prior to commencement of employment by the applicant.
Currency will need to be maintained by the employee for the period of employment.A current full driver's license is required as travel to other offices within the department may be required.This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
