Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Preventive Health CounsellorIt is a genuine occupational requirement that an Identified position be filled by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as permitted by and arguable under Section 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).
Contribute to the effective operation of the Health Contact Centre by providing telephone counselling, information, referral, and advice to people who call services that promote behavioural change.
Your key responsibilities Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.Provide brief telephone interventions, including assessment, information, advice, referral, and consultancy to callers utilising ethical and best practice standards and policies.Develop and maintain knowledge of contemporary standards and policies in the treatment of nicotine dependence.Use contemporary best practice behaviour change and relapse prevention models including elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Motivation Interviewing to increase clients' ability, confidence, and readiness for change.Contribute to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander network within and external to the Health Contact Centre, including participation in the workplace Yarning Circle, mentoring other staff and promoting the service at community events.Provide resources to individual clients and agencies across Queensland via mail and email.Contribute to the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date reference information to ensure the provision of accurate information to callers.Maintain and improve professional skills and clinical knowledge of current issues and new resources and products through participation in on-going professional development and through identifying and pursuing learning opportunities.Contribute to effective team functioning, decision-making and quality service provision utilising high level communication and negotiation skills.Contribute to service monitoring and continuous quality improvement through accurate data collection and data entry, and participation in evaluation and research activities as required.Contribute to overall effective and efficient service functioning by adhering to work unit guidelines and work area protocols including those related to workflow, security, documentation, and literature dissemination.Contribute to organisational goals and a safe workplace, through understanding and adhering to all organizational policies and procedures including human resources and workplace health and safety.Contribute to the effective extended hours operation of a state-wide service by working shifts over a 7-day week.Contribute to the delivery of a range of other telephone-based services operating from the Health Contact Centre, including assisting with contact tracing activities.There may be a requirement to work across more than one site to ensure business continuity in response to technical system outages as well as planned and unplanned building works.
The HCC's current business continuity premises is at Zillmere.Other duties as required.Key competencies/suitability (role specific criteria and personal qualities) Understanding of the cultural and historical issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons engaging with Health Contact Centre services.Demonstrated knowledge and experience in collaborative counselling, referral and education using best practice counselling skills (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Strengths-based Counselling and Narrative Therapy).Excellent communication skills including written and oral communication.Strong self-motivator to work independently and efficiently to achieve team and individual goals within a structured call centre environment.Proficient computer skills (word processing programs, email, and information databases) including the ability to utilise computer technology to find and record client and service information during client interactions.Capacity to contribute effectively to the Health Contact Centre's clinical and operational performance and workplace health and safety requirements through provision of evidence-based care and information, and adhering to relevant workplace instructions, policies, and procedures.A non-smoker (including not being a social smoker) for at least 6 months.Further informationWe are committed to building inclusive cultures in the Queensland public sector that respect and promote human rights and diversity.
