The Department of Music Acoustics - Wiener Klangstil (IWK) at the mdw - University of Music and performing Arts Vienna seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the project “The bowed string. Experimental and numerical investigations of playing techniques in bowed-string instruments”, funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF.

The main goal of the project is to analyse the playing technique in bowed-string instruments by means of experiments with artificial and human players and computer simulations. We aim at investigating the player control over the bowed-string instrument in terms of the interactions taking place at the excitation mechanism. The analysis will take place by monitoring the actions of musicians (using motion-capture technology), instructing a robotic arm to excite an instrument using a bow and formulating a physical model to simulate the bow-string interaction.

**Salary**: According to the Austrian collective labour agreement, the monthly gross pay is at a minimum € 4.061,50 per month before tax (14 times a year).

Offer Requirements

Skills/Qualifications
- a PhD in a field allowing them to carry out research in Music Acoustics (such as mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, musicology);
- a publication record in high quality journals and conferences in the aforementioned research areas;
- experience in acoustics and/or audio signal processing;
- some programming skills (e.g. Matlab, C++ or Python);
- ideally some experience in numerical methods (finite differences, finite elements, system identification);
- previous experience in Music Acoustics research is an advantage.
