At the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna seeks to appoint a

Tenure-Track Professorship in Jewish literary, cultural and religious history (from 1040)
The position

Applicants should represent the subject in research and teaching. The thematic focus must cover at least one of the following research areas: global Jewish literature, Sephardic literary and cultural history, Kabbalah and Hasidism, Jewish philosophy, Jewish art. Knowledge of languages relevant to the subject is required. Applicants are expected to be willing to participate in at least one of the faculty's key research areas and in the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies.

The research priorities of the Department of Jewish Studies clearly define the profile of Viennese Jewish Studies within the international academic discourse and underscore its unique position in the field. Within the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies, the Department maintains close thematic and methodological ties with related disciplines, particularly the Department of History, the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, the Department of Oriental Studies, and the Department of East European History. Furthermore, the Department of Jewish Studies is involved in the interuniversity excellence cluster Eurasian Transformations (University of Vienna, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Central European University, University of Innsbruck). Vienna and Austria offer a wide range of opportunities for collaboration both within and beyond the university context. These include, among others, the Jewish Museum Vienna, the Simon Wiesenthal Institute, the Institute for Jewish History in Austria, and the research focus on Antisemitism Studies at the Institute for Cultural Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. One of the best-equipped specialist libraries in the German-speaking world is available to the Department's staff, providing an excellent infrastructural foundation for research and teaching.

We expect the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor's programmes and for participation in university committees.

the opportunity to obtain a permanent position and eventual promotion to full professor; the initial contract as Assistant Professor is limited to six years, after positive evaluation of a qualification agreement the contract becomes permanent as Associate Professor; Associate Professors can be promoted to Full Professor through an internal competitive procedure
