About The Role As a Research Assistant – Electronics Engineer you will work as part of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering team on the development of photonic chip building blocks for spectral broadening and wavelength conversion of optical frequency combs. Your work will include design, fabrication, testing and integration of nonlinear optical components, dispersion engineering and periodic poling, to convert seed pulses into octave‑spanning frequency combs and characterization of these combs in the electronic domain. The project is part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS) and is affiliated with a defence project in collaboration with the University of Adelaide. Responsibilities Design, develop and test electronic components and systems for photonics and sensing technologies. Fabricate and characterize photonic integrated circuits in lithium niobate with expertise in periodic poling. Operate electronic instrumentation for experimental characterization, including optical/electrical signal interfacing, high‑speed measurements, and automated control systems. Collaborate with researchers, industry and government partners to advance research outputs and secure funding. Engage with higher‑degree by research candidates and multidisciplinary research groups. Qualifications PhD or equivalent in a relevant field. Demonstrated experience in design, development and testing of electronic components and systems. Experience with photonic integrated circuits in lithium niobate and periodic poling. Proficiency in electronic instrumentation for experimental characterization. Track record of quality research outputs, publications and securing competitive research funding. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work within teams. Mandatory Must have submitted a PhD or equivalent in the relevant field. Position engages closely with Australian Defence; a trajectory towards Australian Citizenship is essential. Appointment subject to successful Working with Children and National Police Check. Additional Information The role is based in Melbourne CBD and will follow a hybrid work model.
