Mechanical Engineer - Hydraulics (Heavy Industry) Location: Wollongong, NSW Rate: Up to $100 per hour (for the right candidate) Contract: 12-month hourly rate contract - strong potential for extension About the Opportunity Join a major capital development initiative - Project Prime - with one of Australia's leading heavy industrial manufacturing organisations. This is a hands‑on project engineering role where you'll play a key part in delivering complex hydraulic and mechanical systems through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational readiness phases. You'll be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team driving critical upgrades and improvements to plant infrastructure and production systems. Key Highlights 12-month hourly rate contract - strong potential for extension Hands‑on project engineering role - hydraulics & mechanical systems focus Wollongong-based - up to $100 per hour for the right candidate Role Overview As the Mechanical Engineer - Hydraulics , you will be responsible for delivering allocated project work packages safely, on time, and within budget . This includes coordinating engineering design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover activities while maintaining high standards of HSE compliance and project governance. Key Responsibilities Develop scopes of work, design specifications, and functional requirements for hydraulic and mechanical systems. Lead and manage tendering, procurement, and contract administration for assigned work packages. Review and contribute to engineering design deliverables , including P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and hydraulic circuit layouts. Ensure all project activities comply with safety and environmental requirements - participate in HAZOPs, SIL reviews, and risk assessments . Support construction, commissioning, and operations teams to ensure seamless delivery of engineering outcomes. Monitor and manage project costs, schedules, and risks , maintaining accurate documentation and reporting. Provide technical and contractual support throughout construction, commissioning, and rectification phases. Contribute to operational readiness , including developing maintenance, training, and operating documentation. Key Requirements Tertiary qualification in Mechanical or Hydraulic Engineering (or related discipline). Minimum 5 years' experience managing engineering work packages in heavy industry or manufacturing . Solid understanding of hydraulic systems , including design, installation, and commissioning. Proven experience preparing technical documentation , tender specifications, and contracts. Skilled in project controls , budgeting, and schedule management. Strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence. Proficiency in MS Office and MS Project . Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across multidisciplinary teams.
