This role sits within UNSW Planning and Performance (UPP) to build capability in business intelligence and planning, managing robust data through its enterprise data warehouse, Information Hub, and Data and Information Governance. Why Your Role Matters : UPP is a strategic resource for senior University management, delivering insights, analysis, and management information. As Senior Data Engineer (Student Equity) your focus will be designing, building and supporting data pipelines across student equity information, utilising UNSW's data to inform the priorities of the Student Equity team within the Division of Societal Impact, Equity and Engagement (DSIEE). This includes data ingestion, transformation, and ensuring systems are reliable, sustainable and aligned with platform architecture and the business needs of the Student Equity Team. Working closely with the Student Equity team, you will be building and maintaining a comprehensive suite of dashboards that facilitate institution-wide access to critical insights across the retention and academic success of students from equity cohorts and alternative pathways. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Insight Analytics & Data, and a dotted line to the Student Equity team to oversee the delivery of complex system solutions that establish effective student equity data delivery. Who you are: With demonstrated experience across data engineering, modelling, and data warehouse management, you will be confident in ensuring ongoing efficient data pipelines, stable deployments, and high-performing systems that support effective data visualisation and stakeholder insights. You will hold the following skills and experience: Demonstrated ability to write complex Structured Query Language (SQL), manipulate and analyse data using various tools (including Azure Data Factory, Data Bricks & Analysis Services). Strong expertise in designing and delivering clear, impactful data visualisations using tools such as Power BI to communicate technical insights effectively. Proficient in data modelling, integration, and design, with hands‑on expertise in SQL, Python / PySpark, Unity Catalog, and database schema development. Skilled in designing and implementing solutions using Azure data services. Experience with Azure DevOps and CI / CD tools for automated testing and deployment of data related solutions and database / lakehouse changes. Demonstrated experience coordinating and delivering large scale data visualisation projects in PowerBi to support decision making in complex organisational setting, ideally within higher education. Advanced project management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent complex projects (end to end), to provide high-level advice and review and re‑engineer complex systems and processes. Demonstrated high‑level critical thinking, analytical, research, planning, advisory and creative problem solving skills Strong technical and computing skills with excellent attention to detail. Proven ability to establish highly effective and collaborative working relationships and initiate change using high level interpersonal, influencing and written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated high level administrative and organisation skills including proven ability to prioritise high volume workflow to meet critical and competing deadlines.
