Multicultural Education Aide & Office Administration The host school for the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) since 2008 is St Georges Road Primary School in the south of Shepparton. The School Principal has overall responsibility for the school, including SELC, which operates as a sub‑school of the host school. SELC is based at the Hayes Street Campus of St Georges Road Primary School, a discrete building formerly used by the Shepparton Schools Support Centre. The campus also includes three primary classrooms in a relocatable building on the southeast corner of the St Georges Road PS grounds. The main entrance and office are located opposite 22 Weddell Street, Shepparton. SELC provides Intensive English Tuition to new‑arrival students in primary and secondary government schools in the Shepparton Schools District. Students also receive specialist instruction in Mathematics, Physical Education, Art, Music, Science and/or Aussie Skills. The overall target is 65 students each year, with enrolment typically below 65 only during the COVID pandemic. New‑arrival primary and secondary students attend the Hayes Street Campus full time for 6‑12 months. SELC also delivers a Visiting Teacher Service, providing targeted support to local EAL students who have been in Australia between one and five years, and supports schools that lack sufficient numbers to employ their own staff. St Georges Road PS employs staff on a contract basis, with the possibility of secondment and right‑of‑return provisions for ongoing staff in government schools. Selection Criteria Capacity to undertake routine support tasks across a range of functions in one or more work areas within a school environment. Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with members of the school community, including students, and to provide support and/ or attendant care to students where necessary. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of office systems, software or technical equipment as relevant to the position. Capacity to work co‑operatively with a range of people including teachers, education support staff, students and parents. A commitment to professional learning and growth. Role Support students in the classroom, explain teacher instructions and work requirements. Support the Mathematics teacher, teaching from the beginner primary level through to advanced secondary level. Support teachers’ general communication with students. Guide the work of small groups, or individual, identified EAL students with specific activities prepared by the classroom teacher and promote English language learning. Assist with the preparation of EAL teaching aids/resources to support curriculum delivery. Accompany teachers and students on excursions. Assist school personnel with enrolling identified EAL students and act as a point of contact between parents and the school. Support teachers, student welfare co‑ordinators and outside agencies to communicate with families, and link the families with services. Assist students and their families with transition from one educational setting to another. Assist with the preparation of permission forms and applications and communications to the local community. Act as a resource to develop staff knowledge of the students’ backgrounds and the issues they face. Help involve parents in school activities and programs. Assist school personnel in promotion of multicultural events and activities in allocated schools to raise awareness and celebrate diversity and cultural differences. Attend meetings locally, regionally and state‑wide as requested by the allocated schools as directed. Provide routine customer service tasks such as reception, receipting payments and providing straightforward advice about the school. Perform routine administrative support. Prepare standard documentation and data entry that requires little or no manipulation of information and/or data. Handle customer enquiries and refer to appropriate personnel where appropriate. Operate and instruct others in routine use of equipment and computer systems. Prepare standard correspondence. Provide routine support tasks with respect to grounds and school maintenance. Administrative support in a technical environment. Responsibilities The responsibilities of this position include all duties listed above under the Role section, as well as additional support related to technology and community engagement as required. Who May Apply Proficiency in communication in English and the language of Dari/Hazaragi. Experience working with both primary and secondary aged students. Experience working with students, staff, parents and community members. Experience working in both mainstream classroom settings and intensive English language programmes. Strong interpersonal skills and a preparedness to work with a diverse community in a range of settings. Experience supporting office administration tasks. Experience working as a personal assistant. Current Working with Children Check. Current driver’s licence. Own car with comprehensive insurance to travel from school to school.
