APS6 - Senior Compliance Officer / Senior Investigator, Vehicle Safety Operations Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts – Brisbane QLD The Road and Vehicle Safety Division manages road safety improvements and reduces road trauma across Australia. Its four main functions are: Setting policy direction through national strategies and action plans. Delivering targeted road safety programs. Developing and maintaining legislation, including the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018. Regulating the first provision of vehicles in the market, including certification, imports, enforcement and recalls. The Vehicle Safety Operations Branch administers the legislation that sets vehicle standards for new and used vehicles, establishes a Register of Approved Vehicles and a framework for recalls. The Compliance and Enforcement Section is responsible for compliance and enforcement under the legislation, organised into four interlinked teams: Intelligence, Compliance, Compliance Monitoring, and Investigations. We are looking to fill APS6 Senior Compliance Officer and Senior Investigator positions within this Section. A merit pool may be created for similar vacancies for a period of 18 months from advertisement. Senior Compliance Officer The Senior Compliance Officer undertakes regulatory, compliance, enforcement, intelligence, and compliance support activities. The role reports to an Assistant Director, works within a small team, and regularly engages with investigations officers. Senior Investigator The Senior Investigator leads regulatory, compliance, and enforcement activities with emphasis on complex investigations. The role requires excellent communication and stakeholder engagement, self-directed work, and readiness for domestic travel. The key duties of the position include Senior Compliance Officer Risk assessment, prioritisation and processing of complex reports of alleged non-compliance. Encouraging voluntary compliance and identifying escalation pathways. Developing relationships with stakeholders. Providing guidance to colleagues on reports. Leading high-risk or strategic compliance and enforcement matters and projects. Preparing operational policy, procedures and guidance materials. Senior Investigator Planning complex investigations, setting milestones and allocating resources. Leading sensitive investigations and enforcement matters. Collecting evidence and witness statements. Analyzing information and recommending enforcement responses. Engaging with key industry stakeholders. Preparing investigation reports, correspondence and statutory notices. Collaborating with other authorities. Appearing in courts or tribunals as required. Who are we looking for? Strong commitment to integrity and accountability. Formal qualifications or experience in audit, law, regulation, risk management, compliance, investigation, or engineering. Knowledge of mechanical engineering or the automotive industry. Familiarity with the legislation. Certificate IV or Diploma in Government – Investigations, or willingness to obtain. Eligibility requirements Australian citizenship (waivers exceptional). Health assessment may be required. Security clearance at minimum Baseline Level. Australian Federal Police criminal history check. Integrity and performance check by most recent employer.
