Dynamic Psychotherapy is a private practice located on the edge of the Melbourne CBD, less than ten minutes’ walk from Melbourne Central and Parliament stations, and very close to Lygon Street, Carlton. We have clinical psychologists and psychologists, all of whom are ISTDP therapists or training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), with a range of experience from recent graduates to psychologists with over 25 years’ experience. Our Practice Director, Julie Cochrane, is a Senior Clinical Psychologist who has been practising in Australia as a registered psychologist for over 30 years. She is an internationally recognised teacher and practitioner of ISTDP, having introduced ISTDP to Australia and taught and supervised ISTDP throughout Australia, and in New Zealand, India, Iran (via Zoom), Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, Portugal, and Turkey. We are the largest ISTDP practice worldwide. Our mission is to use ISTDP therapy to enable patients to achieve not only symptom relief but transformational change. We also encourage the use of any effective therapeutic modality and a number of Dynamic Psychotherapy practitioners have experience in a range of approaches in addition to ISTDP, including CBT, DBT, EMDR, schema therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. We provide therapy to adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families. Clients present from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, PTSD, anger management issues, eating disorders, somatic and conversion disorders including Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). We aim to achieve not only symptom relief but personality change. There is provision for low-cost appointments for those with financial challenges. Our therapists, including student therapists, are strongly supported by our experienced reception staff, who are available to assist with administrative tasks. We aim to strongly support practitioners, providing an environment that enables them to thrive—developing effectiveness, confidence, work–life balance, and satisfaction. The Position You will be part of a warm and supportive team from diverse backgrounds. You will manage a caseload of five clients per day over three to five days per week. At least two of these days will be in person, while the remainder can be online. You will work as an independent contractor and receive 64% of the fee paid by your clients, of which 3.6% is paid directly to the Australian Taxation Office as GST on the fee. Your regular client fee will be $215 per 50-minute session. Hours to be determined by agreement. Commitment to work a minimum of 44 weeks per year, and up to 48 weeks per year. Individual supervision will be provided at 40 sessions per year at no fee. Additional individual supervision is available at the regular fee. Practice supervision is provided at no fee. You will take part in various professional development and training programs in ISTDP at no cost if they take place during the period of your clinical registrar program, including one of the biannual three-day Introductory Workshops in ISTDP. The three-year program Core Training in ISTDP is not offered at no fee but is available at the regular fee. Access to psychometric testing and assessment tools. Comfortable office with access to kitchen and staff facilities. Clients are provided by the practice. Warm and attentive administration staff. Access to a practice manual outlining all relevant procedures. Access to consultation with senior clinical psychologists when pressing issues arise. Administrative tasks such as booking new clients, collecting initial client information, payments and processing of Medicare rebates, faxing of communications between the practitioner and third parties, and photocopying related to the practice are provided. Responsibilities Provide psychological services to your choice of children, adolescents, and/or adults. Use evidence‑based psychological interventions in treatment. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions with clients. Monitor client mental health and well‑being. Maintain current and comprehensive case notes for all clients. Collaborate with other support services and community‑based activities. Write reports as required for internal/external use, e.g. assessment formulation, letters to GPs, and letters to other third parties where required, including ‘first session letters to referrers’. Undertake regular supervision. Maintain registration with AHPRA. Work within the bounds of relevant legislation, regulations, and professional codes, including meeting ethical standards as required by the Board of Psychology and AHPRA. Engage in relevant professional development and supervision. Maintain appropriate professional indemnity insurance. Obtain a Police Check. Hold a Working with Children Check. Hold an ABN. Report all cases of harm, suspected harm, or concerns about possible harm of clients to a supervisor. Practitioner Attributes Interest in facilitating deep and lasting personality change (in addition to symptom relief). Focus on building a strong therapeutic alliance with a range of clients. Good risk assessment skills with a willingness to seek help when unsure. Good organisational skills with regard to notes, record‑keeping, and time management. Warm, engaging, and respectful.
