Overview Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia – Melbourne VIC The Associate is part of a small team assisting a Judge in the day‑to‑day management of Chambers and Court. The Associate provides a high level of administrative support to the Judge and supervises and delegates tasks to the Deputy Associate. Key Duties Day‑to‑day running of chambers including responding to enquiries. Supervise the work of the Deputy Associate. Assist the Judge to manage the docket by preparing and managing matters waiting for hearing. Ensure the court’s case management system is up-to-date and assist the Judge in the preparation of orders and typing of judgments. Provide research assistance to the Judge. Assist with the preparation of matters for both the Court and the Judge, including the Judge’s judgment writing as required, such as head notes, catch wording, and editing in line with the Court’s publication standards. Maintain court‑related relationships with various external stakeholders. Contribute to organisational forums working for better working practices. Other duties as required. Eligibility Australian citizenship is required. Security and character clearance: a Police Records Check and possibly additional security clearances. Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period. It is desirable that candidates have completed (or be near completion of) a qualification in law with a strong academic record (supported by an academic transcript). The ability to travel on circuits as required. Selection Criteria Demonstrated legal research, analysis and drafting skills underpinned by good attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to prepare briefing materials, well‑drafted correspondence and case summaries. Sound organisational and problem‑solving skills including the ability to evaluate a large volume of information quickly, manage priorities to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure. Well‑developed interpersonal skills including tact, discretion, initiative and the ability to communicate effectively with members of the judiciary, the legal profession, the public and other court staff. Initiative to work autonomously and take responsibility for progressing work while also being able to work collaboratively, build and maintain positive professional relationships and deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information. Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including the use of Microsoft Office applications, electronic legal resources and the ability to learn and use the Court’s case management systems. The FCFCOA (Division 1) is a superior court that handles the most complex family law cases and serves as the appellate court for family law matters. It operates nationwide, except in Western Australia. The FCFCOA (Division 2) is a federal court that shares jurisdiction over family law and child support with Division 1 and also handles general federal law matters, such as administrative law, bankruptcy, intellectual property and migration law. The Federal Court of Australia entity engages employees under the Public Service Act 1999 to support the Federal Court, the FCFCOA (Divisions 1 and 2), and the National Native Title Tribunal.
