The HREC is responsible for providing rigorous ethical oversight by assessing research proposals involving human participants and determining their compliance with the requirements set out in the National Statement for Ethical Conduct of Human Research 2025 and the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research. Roles Chairperson Members representing the general community People involved in professional care Lawyers People involved in pastoral care Experienced researchers across disciplines The collective membership is intended to represent a broad cross-section of the community. The HREC consists of a minimum of eight members. Eligibility Professional care – a person with knowledge of, and current experience in, the professional care or treatment of people (e.g., nurse, counsellor or allied health professional). Pastoral care – including, but not limited to, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Elder or community leader, a chaplain, a minister of religion, or another religious leader. Qualified lawyer – who may or may not be currently practising. Community member – people who bring a broad community or consumer perspective and who have no paid affiliation with ANU. Role requirements Tasks : Online review of agenda items (including approximately six applications per month). Read, assess, and provide written feedback within the Research Ethics Management System (REMS) for collation by the deadline, and attend one meeting per month. Time : Approximately eight hours per month of application review and one meeting per month of up to four hours (in person or online). Appointment : An initial term of six months, which will be reviewed for potential extension for a further two years (2.5 years total). Appointments and renewals are subject to the approval of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation). Training : Online module (1 hour) and induction session (1 hour) through the ANU Ethics office. Remuneration : Volunteer Members (external to ANU) will receive a thank‑you payment for each meeting they attend. This payment is processed annually and is not superannuable. Options for full‑time attendance (11 meetings per year) or casual membership (attendance every couple of months, depending on need and availability) are available.
