Join to apply for the Solicitor/Senior Solicitor role at Climate Defenders Australia Climate Defenders Australia (CDA) is a first‑of‑its‑kind, not‑for‑profit community legal service that defends frontline climate and environmental defenders against criminal charges and engages in strategic litigation to protect their participation in the legal process, including responses to Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP). We also provide legal information, education and support to the community, advocate for law reform in relevant areas, and collaborate on communication and media strategies. We are a close‑knit team of six staff based at the Greenhouse Tech Hub in Sydney's CBD, and we are looking for a confidence, calm criminal law practitioner who is passionate about human rights, climate justice and capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Responsibilities Conduct criminal law matters throughout Australia. Advocate in the Local and District Courts. Instruct counsel in the Supreme Court, appellate courts and civil jurisdictions. Exercise sound forensic judgement to give timely advice. Contribute to strategic planning for CDA’s legal service provision. Mentor junior solicitors. Engage collaboratively with members and stakeholders across the legal assistance sector. Assist with law reform advocacy. Prepare and present legal education. Collaborate to implement communications and media strategies. Selection Criteria Essential Demonstrated commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights, climate and social justice, through lived experience and/or prior employment. A law degree and admission to practice in an Australian jurisdiction. Two to four years post‑qualification legal experience, primarily in criminal law, including advocacy in Local Court hearings and District Court appeals. Experience developing and implementing public interest litigation, complex law reform and/or community campaigns. Ability to mentor junior solicitors. Strong oral and written communication skills, with confidence and respect in engaging diverse audiences. Ability to work autonomously under pressure, manage time and prioritise effectively. Desirable Experience working directly with communities and clients experiencing human rights violations. Established networks within the community legal sector, legal profession, activist community and/or climate and not‑for‑profit sector. Media engagement skills. Experience in defamation, police accountability, tort law, administrative law or human rights and anti‑discrimination law.
