Data Scientist, Integrated Data & Analytics (2 Roles) Department of Health Victoria – Melbourne VIC The Data Scientist, Advanced Analytics will work in an established, high-performing team on a fixed term project to create a simulation model of selected patient journeys through the Victorian health system. With guidance from a senior data scientist with doctoral qualifications and industry experience, the Data Scientist will work independently to develop and apply machine learning algorithms and other advanced data science techniques to predict how patients move through key areas of the health system and simulate the impact of system changes. Project deliverables will support decision-making and policy design, as well as providing a proof of concept for a more extended application of simulation modelling. About you: Applicants must have proven capability in the development and application of machine learning algorithms and other advanced statistical techniques in analysis of business problems and forecasting. Further, the successful applicant must have demonstrated experience using SQL, R and Python in machine learning and statistical modelling. Experience in simulation modelling (particularly using the AnyLogic platform) or object-oriented programming would be advantageous. Can you Demonstrate the following? Work independently (within a specialist team) to use modern AI methods (explainable AI (XAI) and causal AI) to determine drivers of selected types of health service use and estimate the impact of potential changes in policy or service settings. Document your code and your work appropriately to ensure usefulness beyond the life of the project. Undertake literature reviews and other appropriate environment scanning to inform project methodologies. Work closely with health program and policy subject matter experts to ensure business-relevant design and appropriate interpretation of models and simulations. Prepare and deliver presentations on the work to internal audiences, including stakeholders who are not technical specialists. Qualifications / Specialist Expertise Qualifications Ph.D. in quantitative sciences (preferably applied machine learning or applied statistics in health, human services, or a related field), or demonstrated equivalent industry experience in applying machine learning in health, human services or related fields Specialist Expertise Proven capability in the development and application of statistical and machine learning techniques to provide insight on business problems is mandatory. Demonstrated experience using SQL, R and Python with a focus on statistical and machine learning packages is mandatory. Experience in simulation modelling or object-oriented programming would be advantageous. Previous experience in, or other familiarity with, the Victorian health sector would be advantageous.
