Medical Lead – DDC Screening Program (icare NSW) The primary purpose of this role is to oversee and enhance clinical health screening services by ensuring quality and safety standards are met, while complying with regulatory requirements. This involves monitoring industry trends, collaborating with medical professionals and stakeholders, and providing strategic guidance based on research and national directives. The role also requires effective negotiation and communication to secure stakeholder buy‑in and influence key decisions. Additionally, it involves risk management, strategic planning, and leading professional development initiatives to maintain high standards in medical screening practices. Monitor and respond to emerging trends and developments, ensuring effective controls are in place and all reporting, regulatory, and statutory requirements are fulfilled. Collaborate with and influence medical screening clinicians, Medical Assessment Panel members, Dust Diseases Board and the Health Screening leadership team to evaluate and review guidance and approaches, particularly in response to research findings and national guidance. Negotiate and offer persuasive, commercially viable, professional advice and solutions within the dust diseases sector, taking into account prevention, exposure, screening, diagnosis, care, emerging research, best practice guidance and legislative requirements. Create effective relationships with key internal senior stakeholders and influence them regarding the value of the medical screening service initiatives based on sound research and evidence. Serve as an observer on the Medical Assessment Panel and engage in Health Monitoring Assessment Sessions and Clinical Governance Committee meetings to ensure that consistency, continuity and quality controls are maintained effectively. Manage associated risks and issues to ensure they are accurately identified, assessed, controlled and reviewed, maintaining quality assurance in the change management of medical screening services. Communicate regularly with all key stakeholders to ensure objectives are consistently met. Engage in and contribute to strategic and business planning processes, aligning the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic healthcare initiatives with organisational objectives and outcomes. Take a leading role in resolving escalated issues related to medical screening services. Monitor clinician practices to ensure consistent, best practice service delivery and promptly address professional development needs. Supervise, mentor and provide ongoing professional development to medical and clinical staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and research. Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external peers and stakeholders to effectively share information regarding medical screening services. Collaborate closely with the DDC Leadership team, Manager of Clinical Practice, Manager of Research and Education, and Manager of Stakeholder Engagement to ensure the screening model operates efficiently. Conduct regular audits and reviews of clinical procedures and practices, ensuring alignment with best industry standards, national guidelines and recent research evidence. Liaise with relevant regulatory bodies and stakeholders (e.g. SafeWork NSW, employers/clients) to maintain up‑to‑date compliance with occupational health and safety legislation. Oversee the documentation and record‑keeping of health screening data, ensuring compliance with privacy laws and best practices in medical record management. Skills & Expertise Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as Specialists in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine or equivalent OR Specialists in Occupational and Environmental Medicine or equivalent. Registered as a Specialist Medical Practitioner with AHPRA as an Occupational Physician or Respiratory Physician. Experience in lung health, respiratory medicine, or occupational dust diseases (for example silicosis, asbestosis, COPD). Understanding of imaging techniques (for example HRCT, X‑ray B‑reader certification) if the role involves radiological assessments. Experience in leading teams in a clinical or health screening setting. Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality assurance and risk management. Experience in policy development and implementing best practices in health screening. Ability to interpret screening data to drive continuous improvement. Knowledge of workplace health and safety laws and national occupational screening guidelines. Familiarity with workers’ compensation schemes and occupational health regulations. Experience with AI in radiology, occupational health innovations or epidemiological research.
