Young people typically express a broad range of complex education and social needs, and Flexible Schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices, including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness. The purpose of an Edmund Rice Education Flexible School is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences which enable them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness. ABOUT THE ROLE The role of the Community and Cultural Worker is to provide culturally responsive support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students both within the school and beyond the school gate. This includes case management and wrap‑around support for highly vulnerable young people, as well as proactive engagement with families, Elders, and community members to nurture cultural identity and strengthen educational outcomes. A key focus of the role is supporting students to re‑engage with education by fostering a sense of belonging, cultural safety, and connection to learning. Working closely with students, teachers, and school leadership, the Community and Cultural Worker will promote cultural inclusion in the classroom, contribute to student wellbeing, and help embed cultural practices across the school environment. ABOUT YOU Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, with a proven capacity to engage in respectful negotiation and consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on matters relevant to education and support services for young people. Tertiary qualifications at Certificate level or above, or equivalent experience relevant to youth work, community services, or education, sufficient to successfully carry out the duties of this position. Well‑developed verbal, written and digital communication skills, including the ability to participate in meetings, write reports and case notes, and engage effectively in negotiation and advocacy. Understanding of working with young people, including relevant trends and issues in service delivery to marginalised young people, particularly within the alternative education sector. Proven ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team. Current WWCC and unrestricted NSW driver’s license.
