Groundskeeper

Key Responsibilities Maintain and enhance school grounds, gardens, turf areas, and outdoor learning spaces to a high standard. Carry out routine landscaping duties including mowing, edging, pruning, planting, mulching, and irrigation. Implement horticultural practices suitable for Queensland’s climate, including pest and weed control using approved methods. Inspect outdoor areas regularly to identify hazards and report or rectify any issues in compliance with WHS legislation. Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment (e.g. ride‑on mowers, line trimmers, blowers, chainsaws) safely and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and WHS requirements. Support seasonal preparation of sports fields, playgrounds, and event areas. Undertake minor repairs and maintenance of outdoor fixtures such as fencing, outdoor furniture, paths, and signage. Ensure all chemicals, tools, and machinery are stored and used safely in line with SDS requirements and WHS practices. Assist with emergency response duties such as storm clean‑up and fire safety preparation (e.g. vegetation clearing as per QFES guidelines). Liaise with external contractors as required for larger projects or specialist tasks. Perform other duties as directed by the Head of Facility and Infrastructure in line with the needs of the school. Qualifications Proven experience in groundskeeping and horticultural maintenance (preferably in a school or similar environment). Certificate III in Horticulture (or equivalent qualification or demonstrated experience). Sound knowledge of plant care, turf management, weed/pest control, and seasonal horticultural practices. Strong understanding of and commitment to WHS legislation, risk management, and safe work practices. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks in all weather conditions. Effective communication and time‑management skills. Current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) – or ability to obtain. Current Queensland Driver’s Licence. Experience working within a school or educational facility.
