Technical Lead Developer

Overview Conversion Digital is looking for a Technical Lead Developer to lead our digital agency’s development team, drive technical excellence, and support business growth. Oversee 10-20 developers, testers, and 1 server administrator. Balance technical leadership (50–60%), team management (25–30%), and client/business development (20–25%). Report directly to the CEO/Managing Director. Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Architecture: Set and enforce coding, architectural, and delivery standards across Shopify, WordPress, Next.js, and .NET/Umbraco. Conduct or delegate architectural reviews for major projects. Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies before agency-wide adoption. Guide platform selection and technical strategy for client projects. Code Quality & Review: Ensure consistent code review practices and standards. Monitor code review turnaround times and effectiveness. Mentor developers through participation in key reviews. Platform Expertise: Provide strategic oversight for Shopify, WordPress, Next.js, and .NET projects; advise on platform best practices, integrations, and optimizations. Security: Define and enforce security standards (OWASP Top 10, ASVS Level 2). Oversee security tooling, audits, and developer training. Team Leadership & Management: Mentor and manage developers, testers, and server admin. Foster a collaborative, learning-focused culture. Conduct annual reviews and maintain ongoing feedback. Oversee training, hiring, onboarding, and career development. Client Engagement & Business Development: Serve as senior technical authority in client meetings. Lead technical discovery, solution architecture, and pre-sales support. Develop technical proposals and sales materials. Identify upsell/cross-sell opportunities. Operations & Project Management: Monitor project health, timelines, budgets, and client satisfaction. Remove technical blockers and support delivery. Optimize resource allocation and vendor management. Ensure technical staff are appropriately assigned to projects and load managed. Quality Assurance: Collaborate with QA Lead to ensure coding, testing, and documentation standards; oversee automated enforcement tools and quarterly updates. Maintain test coverage and performance benchmarks. Strategic Planning & Innovation: Maintain long-term technology roadmap. Guide adoption of new technologies and process improvements. Track metrics for cycle time, defect rate, deployment frequency, and MTTR. Web Performance: Champion Core Web Vitals and page speed across all projects. Set performance budgets and oversee monitoring. Approve caching, CDN, and optimization strategies. Required Qualifications 10+ years in software development, 5+ years in technical leadership, 3+ years client-facing in an agency/consultancy. Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field. A technical background with deep expertise coding previously. Ideally an expert with a background across multiple languages. Strong security knowledge. Proven people management, recruitment, and team development skills. Excellent communication and business acumen. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading teams with headless commerce, Core Web Vitals optimization, digital transformation, and high-scale e-commerce. Track record in technical sales, RFPs, and client relationship building. Leadership in training programs, conference speaking, and open source/community involvement. Leadership & Soft Skills Strategic thinking, risk management, and technology evaluation. Clear communication for technical and non-technical audiences. Consultative client relationship management. Team mentorship and development. Adaptability, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. Strong time management and organizational skills.
