Base pay range A$120,000.00/yr - A$156,000.00/yr Join our Downer Professional Services team and play a key role in delivering complex defence and national security projects that safeguard Australia’s future. Downer Professional Services comprises of three business units — our Technical, Advisory, and Capability consulting practice, and Team Downer , which partners with CASG and NSSG as a major service provider to Defence . Together, we are a multi‑disciplinary advisory and delivery partner of choice for clients across Defence and National Security. We currently have an opportunity for an Export Control Officer in Canberra to work on Joint projects. What You’ll Do This role offers a broad scope, with key role responsibilities including: Autonomy & Responsibility : Significant independence in managing Defence‑related projects with accountability for outcomes. Industry Engagement : Regular liaison with industry counterparts to facilitate export control approvals. Export Control Documentation : Development of approval application packages, including Third Party Retransfers and Technical Assistance Agreements. Technology & Data Release Support : Enable controlled releases of technology and data to industry and Defence stakeholders. Governance & Framework Development : Support auditing, record keeping, and assist the Export Control Manager in maturing the organisation’s export controls management framework. What You’ll Bring Legislation & Policy Application : Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement Defence‑related legislation and policy in project contexts. Communication & Stakeholder Management : Strong written/oral communication skills with proven experience managing stakeholder expectations and liaising effectively. Project Planning & Documentation : Skilled in developing and maintaining project plans, instructions, registers, and records management (Defence environment preferred). Independent & Responsible Work Ethic : Ability to work with limited guidance, showing initiative, accountability, and responsibility. Specialised Defence Knowledge : Highly desirable experience with US export controls/ITAR, and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) or Direct Commercial Sales (DCS). Due to the nature of the work, you are required to currently hold and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 1 or higher Security clearance as required by the Commonwealth. In some instances, compliance with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements may also be an inherent requirement.
