About the VGSO The Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office (VGSO) provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. About the Branch and Role The Public Law and Planning Branch comprises three legal teams, including the Land Acquisition, Planning and Environment team. The team’s advisory work covers legislation and other instruments relevant to planning, environment and land acquisition, while its litigation focuses on judicial and merits review, contested land compensation and valuation matters. Reporting to Lead Counsel or Managing Principal Solicitor, two paralegal positions (one ongoing, one fixed‑term) support a team of solicitors advising government clients. Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities Assist with compulsory acquisition work for major Victorian Government projects. Support project coordination, including managing statutory deadlines and tracking matter deliverables. Communicate with claimants and clients, meet deadlines, and manage payments of claims arising from compulsory acquisition of land. Prepare and draft notices, forms, letters and settlement deeds. Support litigation and document‑management/discovery tasks. Conduct legal research to contribute to client advice. Assist in the preparation of tender processes and fee proposals. Relevant Areas of Law Land acquisition and compensation. Planning and environment. Built heritage and cultural heritage. Emergency management. Land valuation. Water law. Merits and judicial review of administrative decisions. Skills and Experience Prior experience working as a paralegal. Excellent attention to detail and consistently high standards. Superior time‑management and multitasking ability. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information. Strong legal research skills and independent working ability. Experience with document management and discovery desirable. Knowledge of compulsory acquisition, planning, environmental and administrative law appreciated. Knowledge of proceedings in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal or the Supreme Court appreciated. Benefits Inclusive, collaborative work environment with support and mentoring.
