Chief Software Engineer – Commonwealth Bank Join us at Commonwealth Bank as a Chief Software Engineer to help build the bank of tomorrow. In this role you will modernise and rebuild our legacy monolithic environment, driving engineering excellence for a wide range of products and regulatory operations. Responsibilities Lead technical strategy and drive solutions for the most complex business problems. Own the end‑to‑end product lifecycle, from design through build, challenge and run. Mentor and inspire engineering teams, fostering a culture of engineering ownership and continuous improvement. Ensure secure, resilient, and high‑performance code with a security‑first mindset, integrating DevSecOps practices from the start. Balance technical debt and commercial needs, delivering rapid, dependable, seamless digital experiences. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define clear technical direction and strategy. Use AI‑engineering and advanced tooling to solve business challenges and accelerate delivery. Qualifications Thrive on building large‑scale enterprise software and can prove it. Strong engineering foundation and broad technical experience. Successfully led teams through multi‑year builds at an enterprise or ASX‑200 level. Hands‑on experience guiding teams in a DevSecOps model. Pragmatic approach to technical debt and prioritisation. Track record of solving complex technical challenges, including new tooling and sunsetting obsolete systems. Encourage risk‑taking, challenge status‑quo constructively and foster collaboration across inclusive teams. Technical Skills On‑premise and cloud application development across Java, Typescript, .NET Core, C#, React, Angular, mobile native. Experience with structured and unstructured databases. Design and implementation of large scale, secure, and observable systems. Automated testing – unit, regression, end‑to‑end. Peer programming, code reviews, automated release management.
