Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine Consultant

The Team Critical Care and Retrieval (CCR) provides a state‑wide Pre Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHRM) clinical service, as defined by the Tasmanian Role Delineation Framework (TRDF). Our critical care (medical team) responses provide pre‑hospital and in‑facility treatment and inter‑facility transport for seriously sick and injured people. We also provide medical coordination and on‑scene clinical support for mass casualty incidents and disasters, and a Critical Care Management and Advice Service (CCMAS), for paramedics, doctors and nurses, and clinical coordination of high‑risk inter‑facility transfers conducted by CCR and non‑CCR crews. The Hobart base, where these positions are based, provides CCMAS, Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), wilderness rescue and road responses with on‑base doctors employed by Ambulance Tasmania (AT). The Role Providing a specialist Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHARM) service to Ambulance Tasmania (AT), by participation in a shift work plus on‑call roster to provide: Critical care and emergency management advice and inter‑hospital transport coordination for the Department of Health, including AT paramedics and Department of Health (DoH) doctors and nurses. Primary (pre‑hospital) and secondary (inter‑hospital) medical responses for critically ill and injured patients. General support, education, and professional development opportunities for AT paramedics and doctors. You will need to: Telephone consult and retrieval coordination service: 24‑hour clinical advice for AT paramedics. Medical retrieval coordination. Direct clinical care: Medical care, including procedures, for adult and paediatric patients during primary (pre‑hospital) and secondary (inter‑hospital) medical retrieval missions by road, helicopter and fixed‑wing platforms. Scene medical responses to major incidents and disasters. Service development: Lead and actively participate in multi‑casualty incident / disaster planning and exercises. Participate in team scenario training and preparation for uncommon emergencies. Support and undertake PHARM teaching and research activities. Close liaison with Tasmanian Health Service (where the employee will also have a specialist appointment), to ensure continuity of patient care and optimal retrieval system function and design. Details of appointment Fixed term part time, shift work (fully rotational with on‑call) position, working 38 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible until 31 July 2026. *notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant. Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full‑time, part‑time, and casual vacancies. Salary $216,300 to $296,640 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount. Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available. Eligibility Specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant speciality. Eligible for, and required to maintain, credentialing by the Tasmanian Health Service in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia or Intensive Care. A reasonable level of physical fitness and ability to swim such that the applicant can function safely in the pre‑hospital and aeromedical environments and maintain helicopter underwater egress training (HUET) currency.
