About the role The Production Coordinator at Union House Theatre is responsible for providing production and event support for student theatre and the Union House Theatre program. The Production Coordinator for the student theatre season is a member of a collaborative working environment within Union House Theatre and operates under the broad direction of the Artistic Director/Theatre Coordinator. As part of the production team, the Production Coordinator works with the Head Technician and Stage Carpenter/Mechanist to support a positive student theatre experience. The incumbent will work closely with students in the delivery of performances, ensure that a safe work environment is maintained, and will also maintain UHT’s risk management systems on behalf of UHT staff and students. UMSU provides student‑facing services and events on University of Melbourne campuses, and work is undertaken in person, on site and after hours as required and/or will require some manual handling of equipment. Key Accountabilities Program Coordination Maintain an active presence to oversee and coordinate all activities within the performing arts venues, including bump‑in and bump‑out, rehearsals and performances; Provide advice on technical equipment and capital requirements; Provide excellent customer service to key stakeholders, that promotes a positive image of UHT, and supports and encourages student use of all venues; Collaborate with the University of Melbourne venue management team in the rollout of the Student Theatre season; Positively contribute to future planning of student theatre programs. Compliance Convene production meetings with all student theatre group users of the venues and workshop, Adhere to OH&S compliance and site inductions as required; Production & Stage Management / Student Engagement Shared responsibility for the production planning, scheduling and resourcing of the Union House Theatre productions and activities, in collaboration with the Artistic Director/Theatre Coordinator and any guest artists; (e.g. designers, composers); Provide technical advice in the programming of Union House Theatre’s workshops, productions and other events; Provide project and stage management advice to student theatre groups; Coordinate and participate in UHT’s production and technical training workshops for students and Student Theatre Groups ensuring OH&S is adhered to; Oversee and support the production management of Student Theatre Group productions; and Provide advice on technical production to Student Theatre Groups as required and advice to students where appropriate; and Administration Update production related documentation, departmental filing systems and information, venue allocation processes and oversee implementation of online resources, as required; Prepare policy, budgets and reports as required. In consultation with Theatre Coord/ Artistic Director oversee Affiliation processes and procedures pertaining to risk management requirements; support with Affiliation System set up and procedures. Key Selection Criteria Essential Skills and Qualifications A degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in technical theatre production and/or broad knowledge and experience in technical and venue operations within performing arts venues. A sophisticated knowledge of the performing arts. Demonstrated experience in stage and production management and design. Demonstrated leadership, organisational, problem‑solving and associated administrative skills. Advanced knowledge of theatre and workplace health and safety, hazard identification and risk assessment. Experience in providing technical training for the performing arts. Demonstrated understanding of relevant computer systems and software. Accredited First Aid Certificate. A valid employee Working with Children Check. Desirable Skills and Qualifications Current Riggers certificate and Elevated Platform training. Current Victorian Drivers licence. Experience in one or more theatre technical disciplines including lighting, audio visual and mechanics / staging. Experience with theatre drafting software eg Vectorworks.
