Where you’ll be working: Royal North Shore Hospital Emergency Department is a busy tertiary service seeing 90,000 adult and paediatric patients annually and serves as a trauma centre and a state‑wide burns and spinal referral hospital. Post Graduate Fellows have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of Trauma Care, from ED resuscitation to operating theatre management and ICU care to post‑operative ward care and discharge. About The Role: The Trauma Fellow will be actively involved in the Trauma Service at Royal North Shore Hospital. This position will involve working closely with team members of the Trauma Service and include liaison with the Emergency Department, Operating Theatres, Intensive Care Unit and the Acute Surgical Service. The role will involve coordinating the resuscitation and ongoing response in major trauma patients and liaising with other critical care and surgical specialties to help co‑ordinate the optimal in‑theatre trauma response and appropriate post‑operative care. The role will involve being a representative at trauma‑related meetings and optimizing the protocols and procedures involved in the management of trauma patients. The Trauma Fellow will be expected to be involved in trauma patient care from arrival at Hospital (Trauma Attends) when able, and in their care on the wards and in ICU. They will be involved in the provision of care of the Trauma patient and its coordination, participate and lead in governance, teaching and review of the Trauma pathways within the Hospital and participate in the Code Crimson and trauma Morbidity and Mortality meetings. Purpose of the Position: The post graduate fellow does not fulfill the same duties as a specialist; it is a transition position between fellow medical practitioners into specialist roles via a short period of supervision. The post graduate fellow does not exercise independent clinical privileges and is supervised by a specialist medical officer at all times, including periods of on‑call. The level of supervision is commensurate to their level of experience. You will provide care and treatment of patients, as a delegate of the specialist medical officer involved in the management of the patient, as part of a multidisciplinary team in a Northern Sydney Local Health District facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC). This position is temporary with the possibility of temporary extension based on performance, funding and need. Selection Criteria MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANCZA) or Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (FCICMANZ) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered. Sound clinical knowledge in Critical Care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality assurance activities relevant to the specialty. Demonstrated clinical, diagnostic and technical skills commensurate with functioning as a post graduate fellow in Critical Care, including Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care. High level interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team environment. Demonstrated participation in and commitment to undergraduate, postgraduate, interdisciplinary teaching and education, including research, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management. Preparedness to participate in any on‑call service (under supervision), including on‑call rosters already existing or established. Need more information?
