Project Officer – Genomics QIMR Berghofer is a world‑leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of cancer, infection and inflammation, brain and mental health, and population health. Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non‑research staff. About the Molecular Cancer Epidemiology Laboratory and Shariat The laboratory focuses on research around the clinical importance of genetic variants. A major project is the leadership and coordination of Shariat, a platform promoting the harmonisation of clinical variant classification nationally. Shariat is the first and only platform to enable real‑time sharing of genetic variant knowledge among Australian and New Zealand clinical genetic testing laboratories ( ). Initially focussed on germline variant classifications, Shariat has recently expanded to share somatic interpretations and evidence. Shariat is a multi‑institute collaboration spanning QIMR Berghofer, Centre for Cancer Biology (an SA Pathology and University of South Australia alliance) and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. To date, more than 44,000 variant classifications have been shared by 18 participating laboratories, enabling laboratories to provide faster and more accurate diagnoses and care for patients. Role Purpose / Responsibilities Applications are invited for a Project Officer with genomics expertise to join the Shariat team. As part of a small, highly motivated team, your involvement will be pivotal in driving the coordination and delivery of the Shariat platform, to bring genomic variant sharing to diagnostic laboratories across Australia and New Zealand. Coordinate priorities and track deadlines to support the timely and successful delivery of Shariat milestones. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to support engagement activities, including onboarding of new laboratories, particularly those performing somatic testing, to Shariat. Design and test elements of the Shariat platform for functionality, with the support of the project team. Liaise with the Shariat developers on implementation and delivery, including daily to weekly meetings as required. Review Shariat submissions to public databases (e.g., ClinVar). Assist with coordinating meetings, and preparing meeting minutes, reports, presentations and publications. Contribute to the preparation, collection, analysis and distribution of information and data as required. Participate in relevant national and international programmes as required to maintain currency with industry standards, and liaise with team members about developments. About You Relevant tertiary qualifications in genomics, science or related field; or equivalent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Practical knowledge of genomic variant curation practices, particularly in the somatic or cancer field. Self‑motivated and highly organised with meticulous attention to detail. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with experience communicating to a wide range of stakeholders. Demonstrated capacity to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Evidence of independent judgement and initiative. Demonstrated ability to prioritise activities and meet deadlines in an ever‑evolving environment. Demonstrated problem‑solving skills. Remuneration Salary range is $95,181 to $106,234 p.a. plus super and generous salary packaging. This is a full‑time, fixed‑term appointment to 30 June 2026, with the possibility of renewal, subject to funding.
