What you’ll be doing The SCHN-Aboriginal Population Health Trainee will complete a three‑year traineeship as part of the NSW Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative. This will involve placement within the health service (SCHN) and part‑time study towards a Master of Public Health degree at a NSW‑based university. The NSW Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative (APHTI) is an ongoing program that commenced in 2011 and is delivered in partnership between the NSW Ministry of Health and the population health services (in this case, the SCHN) across NSW. The APHTI is a three‑year training program comprising part‑time study towards a Master of Public Health in conjunction with employment in the population health services of a NSW health service. It aims to contribute to the development of the Aboriginal population health workforce, with the ultimate goal of improving the health of Aboriginal people in NSW. The objectives of the APHTI are to: Provide a more adaptive and competent Aboriginal population health workforce Increase the number of Aboriginal people with postgraduate qualifications in population health Increase the number of Aboriginal people who have achieved public health workplace‑based competencies Increase exposure of Aboriginal trainees to population health career opportunities Increase the population health workforce's exposure to Aboriginal population health issues, and the value of traineeships. This position will build capacity within the Aboriginal workforce to develop and implement population health strategies to protect and promote the health of the people in the local community. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14(d) of the Anti‑Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). Ability to meet the admission requirements for the postgraduate degree of Master of Public Health (MPH) at a university in Australia. Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities, including demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health. Current unrestricted Australian driver’s licence (P2 Licence Acceptable) subject to obtaining NSW driver’s licence within 3 months of appointment.
