About the Role Join the team to support our Customer Fulfilment Centre in Wetherill Park, NSW, Australia. The Controls and Automation Specialist provides front‑line support for the continuous operation of site material handling equipment (MHE). Work ranges from electrical wiring faults, communications issues, database and reporting needs to detailed analysis of different types of programmable logic controller software. The position also supports continuous improvement initiatives and carries out planned and reactive maintenance activities on MHE, including bots, tote and product handling equipment and associated conveyor networks. The role is shift‑based, reporting to the Engineering Team Manager with a dotted line to the Lead Automation Engineer. Shift work includes days, nights and weekends; flexibility in working hours is essential to support Ocado’s 24/7 operation. Key Customers Senior Engineering Operations Manager Engineering Team Manager Lead Automation Engineer Team Leader Technicians Roles & Responsibilities Carry out planned maintenance across the site accurately, timely and safely, ensuring maintenance procedures are followed. Remotely support partner sites using phone and other company communications tools. Update records of work activities, tasks carried out, parts used, through stores and training given. Work closely with manufacturers, suppliers and internal departments to find ways to improve processes and increase machine reliability and performance. Respond to and diagnose equipment breakdowns, resolve issues and take corrective action. Analyse data to find solutions to improve MHE performance, providing reports where necessary. Complete quality inspections to ensure work is completed to a safe standard. Work to and follow Health and Safety policies, including those set by Ocado, Coles and Australian regulatory standards, seeking guidance from the HS&E team when uncertain. Perform other tasks as required by management deemed a reasonable request. Knowledge, Skills & Experience Demonstrated technical ability in automation and controls hardware, software and communications. Formal tertiary qualifications in a related field are highly regarded. Demonstrable analytical skills with sound problem‑solving ability. Good communication and interpersonal skills, capable of imparting knowledge effectively to others. Excellent organisation skills and ability to prioritise. Self‑starter who is comfortable setting goals and reporting to all levels of management. Hands‑on role that involves working at heights, using a variety of access equipment – comfort with working at heights is required.
