The Crystal Structure Analysis Core Facility and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry and the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science at University of Vienna are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our collaborative research project.

This interdisciplinary project, led by Tim Gruene and Petra Pjevac, aims to structurally characterise novel biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs). BNIs are produced by plants and can provide a competitive advantage for nitrogen assimilation. BNIs act by inhibiting the microbially mediated conversion of ammonium to easily leachable nitrate in soil.

Increasing the efficiency of BNIs, and their use as add-ons to fertilizers has the potential to drastically reduce fertilizer nitrogen losses.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the interface of environmental biology and ecology.

Tim Gruene is an internatioanlly recognized expert in crystallography.

He has been particularly successful in the young field of electron diffraction, where crystal structures are determined from minute crystals.

Petra Pjevac is an internationally recognized expert in microbial ecology, and since 2020 leads an FWF funded young independent research group (YIRG) researching BNI diversity, efficacy and acting mechanisms.

Your future tasks:

  • As a PhD student, you will be part of DoSChem, the largest doctoral training program in Austria focusing on chemistry. You will have access to a wide range of training and professional development opportunities, including list workshops, conferences, seminars, etc. We are dedicated to nurturing your skills and advancing your career.
  • You will have access to stateoftheart facilities, including electron and Xray diffractometers, fully equipped chemistry and microbiology labs. Our institutions offers a supportive research environment conducive to academic excellence.
  • You will teach courses independently to the extent specified in the collective agreement.
  • You will be actively involved in research, teaching and administration: and you will participate in research projects and research studies.
  • You will have the opportunity to publish your research in toptier journals and present at prestigious conferences. Networking with leading experts in the field will enrich your academic experience.
  • You will be expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 1218 months.
  • Furthermore you will supervise students and carry out administrative tasks in teaching or research.

This is part of your personality:

  • You have a diploma or masters degree in chemistry, preferably in inorganic chemistry or biochemistry.
  • You have a basic knowledge in crystal structure (determination), a basic skill in organic synthesis and basic knowledge in matabolism (bacteria / plants)
  • Team player, experience in academic teaching. Profound verbal and written skills.

Desirable qualifications are:

teaching experience and experience of working with e-learning, knowledge of university processes and structures and ideallyexperience abroad - Basic experience in research methods and academic writing.
