The Opportunity
The Principal Aboriginal Heritage Advisor is responsible for the provision of leadership, technical and policy related expert advice and information regarding the coordination of specialist Aboriginal heritage services to the Department. This role has a major contribution to the development and credibility of the Department's technical/professional and cultural reputation and the sustainability of essential discipline-related in-house expertise, capability and corporate knowledge.
Through the formation of specifications and standards in line with business needs, legislative compliance and risk management the Principal Aboriginal Heritage Advisor ensures commitment to the Department's Reconciliation Action Plan, facilitates better outcomes and protections for Aboriginal heritage, and improved outcomes for contemporary Aboriginal communities across the state.
The Principal Aboriginal Heritage Advisor is responsible for maintaining the technical adequacy, currency, relevance and integrity of discipline-related Departmental standards and guidelines. The Principal Aboriginal Heritage Advisor will competently provide discipline advice reflective of industry capability and suitable to projects and programs in the field of infrastructure planning, construction, operations and maintenance.
About You
The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership skills, the ability to resolve complex issues, and innovative problem-solving capabilities. They will also have skills effectively coordinating and managing critical professional programs, projects, assets, and services.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to communicate verbally and in writing and build networks with key Government and non-Government Agencies. Demonstrated ability to liaise, present to, and negotiate with Aboriginal nations, groups, representatives, engaged consultants, and key Aboriginal organisations on behalf of the Department is important.
This role involves the provision of advice and guidance to Departmental Senior Executives, Project Managers, colleagues, and contractors in the application of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 and related guidelines, along with the Native Title Act 1993. In this role, you will coordinate and conduct reviews of Aboriginal heritage and Native Title assessments, providing crucial guidance within the Department's Environment and Heritage Impact Assessment process. You will also be responsible for procuring technical expertise and liaising with various stakeholders, including Aboriginal nations, groups, and representatives.

Requirements
A relevant and recognised degree and/or post graduate qualification in anthropology or archaeology is required.
A current Driver's license is essential.
Special Conditions
The successful candidate will be required to provide a National Police Check (NPC) prior to employment with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport which must be renewed every three years.
Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.
