Principal Primary Engineer, substation + renewables

Our client, a leading engineering consultancy, is seeking an exceptional Principal Primary Electrical Engineer to join their team in Melbourne. This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly experienced and chartered electrical engineer to take on a crucial role in the design and implementation of primary electrical systems for high-voltage substations, solar farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The Role
As the Principal Primary Electrical Engineer, you will lead a team of skilled professionals, leveraging your extensive technical expertise to deliver innovative and robust electrical designs that meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the design and engineering of primary electrical systems, including power distribution, grounding, lightning protection, and electrical services for HV substations, solar, and BESS projects
- Conducting detailed electrical load calculations, short circuit studies, and voltage drop analyses
- Developing electrical single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and technical specifications
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including project managers, architects, and other engineering disciplines
- Ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and best practices (e.g., NEC, NFPA, IEEE)
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior electrical engineers
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you must possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- Chartered status with a recognized professional body (e.g., Engineers Australia)
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in primary electrical design, with proven expertise in HV substation design, solar farm electrical systems, and BESS electrical integration
- Professional Engineering (PE) license is required
- Strong proficiency in electrical design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SKM Power Tools)
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
