The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Carpathian Convention provides a framework for cooperation and multi-sectoral policy coordination, a platform for joint strategies for sustainable development, and a forum for dialogue between all stakeholders involved - from the local community and various NGO’s up to the regional and national Governments, Institutions of the European Union and the United Nations. Apart from support to the implementation of the Carpathian Convention, UNEP Vienna Programme Office also provides the sub-regional coordination of activities in the Balkan/South East European (SEE) region. In addition, the Vienna office supports UNEP’s global delivery on mountains, notably in the context of climate change adaptation, regional governance, interregional exchange, ecosystem, and wildlife conservation.

The internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension up to 6 months, if required by the division.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

The intern will support work of the UNEP Vienna Programme Office, especially the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention, the mountain project portfolio, and GEF projects. This will include linking Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), biodiversity protection and communication in the Carpathian region; A Carpathian Network of ESD Experts is under establishment, with the aim to strengthen learning and communication among the Convention stakeholders and to integrate Convention activities with national, regional, and international educational initiatives and frameworks. As one of the core activities of the Network, the establishment of a Carpathian Week with ESD-related activities in all countries, in collaboration with the Carpathian Network for Protected Areas, and the Science for the Carpathians network, has been proposed.
Additional main tasks will be assisting with the organization of a Mountain Innovation Fair with stakeholders from different mountain regions of the world and supporting work for setting up a small grants scheme in East Africa and South Caucasus in support of innovative adaptation solutions.

Further task will include providing background support for the implementation of the Vanishing Treasures and CAMCA projects, focused on climate-smart wildlife conservation and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation in Central Asia and Bhutan.
